    Sagging roof

What is a new roof likely to cost? It's probably 4.5m wide by 13 ish long. I assume the timbers need replacing so factor that in; I think the slates look ok but any idea of the cost if the tiles are reused, and cost if they are replaced? anyone? thanks

    Sagging roof

Thanks for the input everyone. Woody - would replacing the tiles do the trick or do you think some work is needed to straighten the lines out or even replace the timbers? If so, any idea what it might cost? The roof is about twice the length backwards as you can see on the front...

    Sagging roof

Hi, is anyone able to suggest how to deal with a sagging roof please? The hip rafters on both sides of the roof are sagging a bit and the tiles have started to lift up like birds feathers separating. There appears to be a little bit of water damage to the rafters on the inside. Can...

    making front door secure

Thanks for all your replies. In the end I got rid of the old softwood lining and had a hardwood frame and door (no glass) fitted with a BS night latch and BS mortice lock. I'm very happy with the result! I didn't opt for a London/Birmingham bar as they don't look that neat in my opinion...

    making front door secure

Hi, I'm developing a flat where the old front door lining has split at the lock where it was kicked in and I want to make it all properly secure. I have replaced the lock-side of the lining but it just seems a little too thin for a front door for my liking. The door is set back under stairs...

    Piping under concrete

Yes, it is a speedfit joint and hep20 pipe. It's just that someone told me copper lasts indefinitely (as long as its protected) whereas plastic will start leaking after 10 years or so. Do you disagree with this? I'm going to fit central heating in a house soon and was going to use copper but...

    Piping under concrete

Hi, yesterday whilst fitting a toilet to a concrete floor I drilled through a water pipe buried in the concrete. It had been a long day and despite turning off the stop tap there was still a drip flow so I got a plumber out to fix it. What surprised me was that he didn't use copper but...

    Tiling the underside of boxing

Hi, I need to tile the underside and side of some boxing on the ceiling but whereas on the walls I've been able to fix batons and set the tile positions with spacers and wedges, there is no support on the boxing to set them against. I am thinking I could screw wood in place on the bottom of...

Fitting electrical points in a hob

Oh - one other thing, the oven is on the ring main. Is a 13amp fuse correct? It is a single door oven. Thanks

Fitting electrical points in a hob

Hi, I have just fitted a hob where there were 2 points for live, and they needed to be joined. I used 2 pieces of 1mm copper wire, unsheathed to connect the 2 lives. Is this an acceptable way of doing this or what is the correct way please? Thanks for your help.

What silicone to use to seal my sink on a real wood worktop?

Hi, revitalising an old thread here, I hope some of you guys can help me. I am midway through installing an oak worktop and have a couple of knowledge gaps: I understand I need to sand it - what grain sand paper is best? And how much sanding are we talking? A real scour or just a gentle...

    Installing wooden worktop

Thanks for that. Is it normal to make the short cut through the surface with a circular saw or a router? Also, when I come to the corner with the roundover, do I run it off the edge straight or try to bring it round to soften the 90 degree tip part of the corner? Cheers

    Installing wooden worktop

Hi I am going to install my own wooden kitchen worktop and am reasonably clear on the jig/router part but not on how to finish the open (short) end of the surface. I suspect a specialist router bit will be needed - can anyone advise please? The long lengths are squared off but not with a...

    Water-damaged RSJ replacement

Hi Rico, thanks for the suggestion. This is an auction purchase so I'm going to have to take it on if I'm successful. I just want to make sure I can get the costings right and keep the price as low as possible.
