    4 cables feeding 1 socket

You say four cables feeding it. That seems strange. Could the old ones be the ring and the other two spurs going to other sockets? It would be worth finding out where each cable runs to, or from, then decide how to proceed.

    Not so Smart Meter display

I'm sure it is the remote display in my house that is at fault. It never shows any use of gas but sometimes goes wild over electric use. The actual meter gives a very similar usage to the old one that had a rotating disk. any yes I am sad enough to have kept a note of my meter readings for...

    Not so Smart Meter display

I'm safe as there is a limit to how much I have in my bank. There is no way they could charge me for that. 5266 KW per hour over 24 hours at 13p per unit would cost £16,429. I refuse to work out the cost per month at that rate per day but I can assure you it is more than my pension. I’ve...

    Not so Smart Meter display

I'll go downstairs and read the meter at some point. as it is not melted it can't have recorded that. I switched off the display and switched it back on and it now shows a far more reasonable 388W use. I usually only use the display to check the time as the clock is accurate.

    Not so Smart Meter display

I thought in the spirit of making you smile at Christmas I’d post this. There have been a few posts on here about the size of the main fuse to a house. I am wondering what size I have fitted as according to my Smart Meter display I am currently using 5266 KW so I calculate that to mean I am...

Minor electric shock with the power off... faulty circuit breaker?

Are there any fluorescent fittings on the circuit? They can have capacitors that can give a nasty shock as they discharge.

    Faulty meter?

I get my gas and electric from Octopus. I have found them good to deal with and very quick to respond to messages.

Unused BT line, can I move it/remove it?

I had a BT cable coming into my bathroom through a hole drilled in the wooden window frame. The black two core cable went to a junction box and a white four core from there to the master socket. I had Virgin for phone and internet so when the windows were replaced, I snipped the cable outside...

    Mr Bean strikes again!

The bit about the pipe reminds me of a few years ago (OK 40 years ago) I had a phone call from a house owner who had decided to fix down the floorboards in this first floor hall. I can easily understand how he managed to nail through one central heating pipe but he then went on to repeat the...

    Water Heater

Thanks, no listed building consent as it is not listed, it is about 90 years old. The reason for going for gas is that the usage varies a lot, not used for a few days then constant use for a day. Instantaneous is better than storage for this and gas is more economical. I've looked at Rapid...

    Water Heater

I look after a church and the water heating system is terrible. There are three small electric water heaters which give tiny amounts of hot water. I’d like to replace them with one gas fired heater but I have no idea what to look for. (I want to know what we need and ask a couple pf gas safe...

    synchronize to Live

I have a desktop PC running Windows 10. I can link one folder on the C drive to Live Drive online. This is handy as if the internet is slow, I can work on anything in that folder and it will update the online copy when it can. I can also access those files on my laptop, tablet or phone which...

Outside house lights without wires showing

I thought the problem was that a cable could touch the outer and the inner leaf of the wall and damp could be transferred by water running over the outside of the cable. I am not sure how likely this is to happen

    Can I remove fuses individually?

Way back in the days when that fuse box was considered to be really modern I was told to always turn off the main switch before removed a fuse. The reason is that if you pull out a fuse that is carrying some current it is possible to get arcing and nasty burns from molten metal, not likely but...

    Faulty meter?

I know I stirred things up slightly but it is interesting that I phoned my DNO and asked if they would pull the main fuse so I could fit a switch fuse. I was asked when I planned to do the job, I gave a date and was told to pull the fuse and fit the new switch fuse and someone would come the...

    Faulty meter?

I know it is dangerous and illegal but if I was in your situation I'd be considering pulling out the main fuse. That would give zero chance of any power going through the meter. I know it is illegal and dangerous but I'd be considering pulling the main fuse and seeing if anyone complains that...

    What a strange coincidence

I rode a motorbike with a reverse gear. I am sure it was not an Arial. I did not own it but could borrow it occasionally. The reverse was good when it was combination (motorbike and sidecar) but not so easy when solo. I used to love the faces of other bikers as I reversed away from the pub...

    linked alarms

There are new regulations coming into force in Scotland next year about smoke alarms. At present I have a heat detector in my kitchen and a smoke detector in my hallway, both mains powered and linked. I will add another smoke detector in the room most used during the day. I also have a carbon...
