How bad could it be? (leaking roof)

Thanks Alastair. Fair point, if this was the case would I be right in assuming it would be a case of removing all slates and replacing the sarking, along with a new membrane then refixing slates (old or new as dependant on condition of current ones)? Would it be pretty common practice to...

Cracks and pointing on an old stone house

Thanks, having read what I can on the subject, I was aware that this type of property should be repaired with lime mortar. On looking at it I'm assuming the repairs have been done with cement as I think lime mortar would have a more brown kind of tone and smoother texture? Am I right? With...

How bad could it be? (leaking roof)

Thanks, that's good to know, out of interest was that simply due to the age of the slate? When you were replacing, what type of slates were required? I wasn't sure if it would be Welsh slate up here, or possibly Scottish stuff from Ballachulish given the age of the property?

refurbishing a fairly unusual oriel window & some sashes

Hi folks, I'm posting a few questions in different sections about a house we are thinking of buying. One of the issues is that it has sash Windows and an unusual oriel window. I was hoping someone could possibly give me an indication of how much it would cost to refurbish both the oriel and the...

Cracks and pointing on an old stone house

Hi folks I'm posting a few questions in the relevant sections with regard to a house we would like to buy. It's a good bit over 100 years old and of sandstone construction I believe. Survey said 700mm thick walls. There appear to be some cracks which have been patched up don some point and the...

How bad could it be? (leaking roof)

Hi folks, I've leant on the knowledge of this forum before so I hope you can help. We're looking at a house we want to buy in Stirlingshire and the survey indicated the roof has leaks, specifically round the chimneys and that the timber shows damp staining. There also appears to be some...

A rathe large flat roof... what's the worst case scenario?

I'd thought that if I was going to attempt it I'd do it in three sections to make it more manageable. More joins, which isn't ideal but probably more manageable. Thanks for the suggestion on a borescope. I could probably pop out the roof halogens and poke it up through there to save making holes...

A rathe large flat roof... what's the worst case scenario?

Thanks for the input, fair enough, though there shouldn't be any scaffold required, it's only a single storey and not particularly high. I'm not sure what the mark up would be on materials but I figured what I can buy it for without trade discount would be pretty close to what the company would...

A rathe large flat roof... what's the worst case scenario?

Hi all, I hope I can gain your collective insight on this... We are looking at a property which is part of an old manor house now split into eight separate dwellings. When it was converted in 1986 a large extension with a flat roof was added to the rear. Part of this covers the ground floor of...

Strange crystal like furry stuff & blistering paint? pic

Thanks lads, it is an internal wall between our block of tenements and the block next door do shouldn't be the pointing. Not exposed to the outside and no plumbing running through it. Could possibly be moisture getting through from the old chimney breast from next door but I doubt it. More...

Strange crystal like furry stuff & blistering paint? pic

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help to identify this. It has appeared as a line on our kitchen wall which was plastered just over a year ago and then painted in standard white kitchen paint. There was nothing coming up until a few weeks ago. I scraped it all off, presuming it was a splatter...

Advice on building v large MDF storage cabinets/workstation?

Thanks again for the input. I'm waiting to hear back from a company that supplies 18mm MFC precut to size to see how much it will come in at. It would save a lot of hassle painting the MDF as I can't seem to find a local supplier of veneered MDF or one that will cut and courier it. Regarding...

Advice on building v large MDF storage cabinets/workstation?

Do you mean 18mm MFCB or MDF? problem is I need to buy from somewhere who can cut it for me so I'm pretty much limited to B&Q where they only sell 15mm. My ideal situation would be finding some 18mm MFCB in 2440mm by something along the lines of 760mm width. I can get that size in 15mm MFCB...

Advice on building v large MDF storage cabinets/workstation?

Thanks for the input. I'd use the MFCB but I can't get it nearly as cheaply as 18mm MDF - 18mm mdf comes in at about £14 a sheet while the MFCB comes in at about £25 per sheet. I was concerned that 15mm would be quite flimsy given the height of the units and the amount of load on them. Do you...

    oak kitchen worktop

Would second ebay as a suggestion. Especially if you have the space to prep it all yourself as sometimes the cheaper tops aren't as well sanded and need a little prep. I got mine off a company on ebay, 40mm thick 4metres long for about £130 quid. Also a little tip. For finishing it I looked all...

Advice on building v large MDF storage cabinets/workstation?

Hi all, I was hoping to get some opinions on the storage unit I'm building (plans below). It is needed to house my freezer and washing machine in the bottom part of the two tall cabinets. I plan on putting a wardrobe rail and maybe even some drawers in the spaces above. The top section...

Levelling and squaring a wall, whats possible?

John, I was wondering about this, my worry is that I might end up damaging the face of the wall on the opposite side (which is part of the bedroom). Maybe it would be worth getting a builder/plasterer to do this. Steve, thanks, I'll look into that. I should have said before that as the room is...

Levelling and squaring a wall, whats possible?

Hi all, just after some advice, I am about to do our kitchen but the back wall is a stud wall that was put up to create the current small internal kitchen layout. As it will be the return for an L shaped unit layout life would be a lot easier if it was square and flat. However it is not. It...
