    Stove flue

Does anyone have any experience with flue liners. I'm building up my fireplace too accept a inset stove which will have a 125mm liner. My issue is that the front of the flue spigot will be almost plum with the back of the lintel.the lintel sits approx 200mm above the sigot but I also need to get...

    Finishing hearth

Yes I had actually also considered that option too with quarry tiles . Also wondered if I could just screed the area with some heat resistant cement type product. I think my main concern with all the options (probably way overthinking it all ) is how whatever I use will stand up to the heat

    Finishing hearth

Thanks again for the reply so basically (if I've read it correctly) your suggestion is to make a stepped hearth which is approx 18mm higher in the recess.tiles would then lay flush upto the higher level in the recess

    Finishing hearth

Tiling after fitting will be difficult because it does as you say come right down to floor (hearth) level. Your suggestion to use Hardie was exactly my original plan ie would bed the board on the concrete to finish at the same level as the tiles. I was put off as I started looking at heat...

    Finishing hearth

Thanks for the reply. Ok so because the Stove is inset type then the tiles will be hidden by the Stove.

    Finishing hearth

I'm just in the process of pouring concrete to form my new constructional hearth. (See my other post) I will screed the concrete off level with my floorboards (pic shows roughly how it will but will obviously be smoother and level with floor boards) the opening will then be bricked up to form a...

    Hearth reconstruction

Little update.got the dpm in place and now all ready to pour concrete up to floorboard level. original lintel was poorly fitted. think they must have realised last min that the lintel was too short for the opening so stuck a couple of overhanging bricks in(suppose regs were very different in...

    Hearth reconstruction

Last course of brick now in and damp proof. Just need some membrane for the central area. Then going to pour concrete to bring to floor level. As before I'm a complete novice just doing what seems the best way so any advice is always welcome

    Hearth reconstruction

Just an update on my work as may help someone else. Not really sure if I'm doing things exactly by the book and always happy to receive advice or pointers. The 2 joists which originally sat embedded into the hearth are now cut back and chemical stud fixing into brickwork. The lower fixing in one...

    Hearth reconstruction

Thanks again. Yes I'll do sand before dpm then concrete in top. I'll get lapping on all dpc to dpm joints (might not actually get what regs say but I'll take my chance lol) glad to hear that I'm roughly on the right track as had a bit of a slating on another forum basically saying I was making a...

    Hearth reconstruction

Hi Jake thanks very much for the reply.so The bricks that you see in the picture extend down (into the void under the floor) for about 1m and are basically just built on top of earth so there is no actual DPM/dpc.

    Hearth reconstruction

Hi. I'm rebuilding my hearth and trying to install some sort of dpc/DPM. There is a bitumen dpc running in the main wall and I have managed to rake out a little of the joint above this to allow me to insert some dpc sheet. I've attached some pics which show where I'm at. Basically my next step...

Do you mean mild steel plate into the joint of the overhanging bricks

    Dodgy lintel

I did consider this but thought that the option of inserting new lintel under original would probably be easier

    Dodgy lintel

    Dodgy lintel

Yes I'm sure as there are no cut bricks so must have been fitted when house was built

    Dodgy lintel

Original 1939s lintel obviously not installed very well. Do I chop back the bricks either side and completely replace with a longer lintel or remove the 2 overhang bricks and install new lintel under the original
