Is my fridge freezer working ok?

From the photo, it looks like you're measuring the temperature of the fridge. Opinions vary slightly as to the optimum fridge temperature but mostly somewhere between 2C and 4.5C although temperature often varies a little throughout the fridge cabinet - especially with glass shelving (as you...

    Ants in the house

Would appreciate any ideas or guidance... My neighbour has very persistent ants in three adjacent rooms on one side of her bungalow. The ants invade her home for several months each year, rising up at different points (often, not on an outside wall) and its been going on for a good few years...

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

For the sake of completeness... I know it's only two months since the drainage plumbing mods - but two hot months and there's no smell whatsoever from the sink drains. Haven't even needed to use any cleaning agents. Sorted.

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

Ah, forgot to mention that. Yes, the dishwasher waste pipe has been fixed as high up as possible within the under-sink cupboard. Thanks.

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

That is inconvenient though. Why not add another P trap directly beneath the second bowl? Absolutely. Should not be generally available. Right, that's both my kitchen sink bowls fitted with P traps. Only 4" of vertical pipe between each plug hole and the water in the P trap beneath so should...

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

Likewise, although I use caustic soda solution to remove grease before using bleach. Thick bleach usually contains caustic soda so that could be a "one-stop" solution. Thin bleach won't remove the grease etc that harbours the smells hence the short-lived success. I've altered the plumbing on...

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

Interesting product I didn't know existed. I'll bear it in mind for the future but there's room beneath my sink for more conventional (and much cheaper) plumbing options.

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

All replies appreciated, thanks. Guilty. I fitted the new dishwasher earlier this year and as the smell started over a year ago, the dishwasher probably isn't contributing to the stench - yet. I understand what you mean about the possibility of the sink waste water draining/syphoning back...

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

Thanks for the feedback. As suggested, a photo. Note: the sink is designed with no overflows fitted to either bowl. The coiled grey flexible tubing is the dishwasher drain. This won't be the first bit of plumbing I've had to rectify.

    Smelly kitchen sink drain

Had a new kitchen installed in 2017 which included a double bowl s/s sink with new drainage plumbing beneath. Since early on, there's been an unpleasant smell coming up through both sink bowl plugholes. I haven't used expensive "foaming" type cleaners but the usual disinfectant, bleach and...

    Help! Double glazing manufacturer run-around?

I think it's about communication and managing the expectations of everyone involved - an issue I was keenly aware of (and thus made efforts to mitigate) before our building work started but I still got caught out by the unexpected a few times. Hope the trickle vents solve the condensation problem.

Oops. I just picked up on that!

    Help! Double glazing manufacturer run-around?

I guess that's the decision we all have to make when deciding on new windows & doors. In some cases though, such as a new 3m x 4m window in our recent extension, the architectural technologist advised against plastic due to strength issues. And as you say, applies to bifolds too. Our obvious...

    Hinges for hanging internal doors

Would appreciate advice/guidance on this issue... I'm about to order some internal doors. They are manufactured from engineered board (of some kind) covered with real wood veneer. Each door weighs 30kg. Question: Can I hang them with two, four-screw hinges (i.e. strong 102mm bearing hinges)...

    Help! Double glazing manufacturer run-around?

Probably too late to be useful but I just stumbled across this post which concerns problems I've encountered with new aluminium-framed windows and doors that were fitted to my place in 2107. Apologies in advance for the rambling post! Our alloy framed, triple-glazed windows have an WER band B...

Uneven floor level following repair work

Thanks for your responses. Not as bad as I feared. There's a 17mm level difference between highest and lowest patches close to each end. That's over a 4m x 2m floor area. What would be an acceptable level tolerance on that floor area? Since we've had a fair bit of building work done over the...

Uneven floor level following repair work

I'd appreciate advice/guidance on this matter... Recently had an old, uneven concrete floor repaired with a water-based fibre levelling compound. The idea being to leave the floor ready for a floor installer to do fine levelling and lay vinyl covering. The floor now looks great and feels solid...

    What type of wood filler?

Would appreciate advice on filling a few holes in an external wooden door. I wish to keep an old external porch door (glazed) going for another year or so until a new porch is constructed which will require a new door. The old door has a few areas of wet rot which I intend to dig/rout out then...

    WHO CARRIES OUT THIS WORK?

Sadly, wrong side of Kent for me (perfect for the Mother-in-law though. I shall bear this in mind if ever she wants a LVT/vinyl floor). Understood. An increase in depth up to 10 -12mm would be OK. If necessary, I'd remove high spots first to reduce building up. One final question if I may: Is...

    WHO CARRIES OUT THIS WORK?

Thanks for the info. Can you give me a rough idea of the total thickness of this combined screed>DPM>screed? Parts of the existing floor are not stable so I think it will at least involve digging up some of the floor and re-screeding. I may go against my usual M.O. and not have a...
