    Permission needed for raised decking?

Ah many thanks - wasn't aware of the detail on 30cm rule. That could help a lot. There is a "general" covenant to which refers to creating an annoyance or something similar so really, just making sure you don't upset neighbours etc. This, I think may be hard to enforce especially if you are...

    Permission needed for raised decking?

Hi, would really appreciate an opinion on this potentially complicated situation. We're planning to buy a house that has a raised decking (>30cm) that was built in 2007. It has been the cause of dispute with neighbours due to size etc. Currently the sale of this house is obstructuted due to...

    push button cistern

Sounds like you have a leak from your cistern - I am fixing the same thing. Cut off water supply, empty cistern and try taking the mechanism apart to see where it comes from. New mechanisms are not expensive and depending on how your cistern is positioned, may be easy to replace.

    Re-fitting cistern onto WC pan

I had to decouple my cistern from the WC pan to fix a leak. The connection holding the cistern onto the pan was made by 2 bolts going through the bottom of the cistern into the pan. The end of the bolts either had a nut or some other type of fixing but this is now lost forever as it was not...

protect external cable on wall - where ot buy trunking?

Yes - mainly for vandal protection. I saw some galvanised metal that might be suitable (was only 99p for 2m - bargain) so unless I can find something more specific to this task I guess I can use that with some masonary nails.

protect external cable on wall - where ot buy trunking?

Hi, I'm trying to protect a cable (in this case it is a telephone line) that runs up a wall outside my mother's house. I've visited 4 DIY stores looking for something purpose made for this - thinking of metal trunking with pre-drilled holes for nails? Nothing seems to be there - also had a...

Lights that can't be connected to the lighting circuit?

OK, so it sounds like there is nothing specific to the lights I bought that makes them unsuitable and if I replace the existing ones all will work. Only issue is that if one is damaged then I can't isolate it easily - as this is exactly the same situation with the currently installed lights...

Lights that can't be connected to the lighting circuit?

OK thanks for that. I always remove the fuse from the CU when doing anything (aside from a changing a bulb!).

Lights that can't be connected to the lighting circuit?

Hi, I've purchased some outside lights (simple wall lights with 40w bulbs) to replace existing bulkhead style ones. The new lights are double insulated (not that I think this is critical - just background info). The instructions state - "Do not wire this light into the lighting circuit...

Bodged walk-in shower - recommendation for fix

Cheers Jason. All seems to have gone OK - the timber shutter was just fine for wedging in the gap which made life a bit easier. I look forward to seeing how it looks tomorrow morning when dry. Adam

Bodged walk-in shower - recommendation for fix

Thanks Jason. Final questions (I hope for now at least): The screed - is there anything I should do to prep for this or just make this up and fill the hole? Any recommendations for mixture- couldn't see any idiots guide to this so will ask at the builders yard otherwise. I assume the...

Bodged walk-in shower - recommendation for fix

Well they were supposed to come back and fix it as it was clearly not going to work without some kind of slope - they didn't despite lots of chasing. Now I'd rather do it properly myself rather than continue to harass them and at best end up with another poorly done job. Thanks Jason - how...

Bodged walk-in shower - recommendation for fix

Hi, I had a plumber replace a bathroom a year or so ago and there is a problem with part of the flooring. This pic shows the bathroom in its current state (I removed the offending piece of tiling: On the right you can see that the bare concrete floor is now visible. This was...

    Re-felting my shed

OK, thanks for the replies. Have found some plastic to keep on the roof while it rains! I'll measure the roof thickness before I get the clouts. I saw in Wickes "single sheet" roofing felt for sheds. Can this really work? It says that you just nail it on and no cap sheet required...

    Re-felting my shed

Hi all, the inside of the roof of my shed is damp so I figured I'd remove the old felt (3 layers) and re-felt. I've taken off the old felt but the wooden roof is obviously quite damp still - do I need to let this dry before re-felting or can I felt as is and leave the door/window open to...

Is my new roof any good - pictures included!

Had a look from on top and the overlapping sheets aren't secured near the bottom (lower end of the sheet) and they have flexed up a bit which easily allows water in. Quite concerned about the significant damp areas around the screw/nail entry points. The roofers are returning soon to...

Is my new roof any good - pictures included!

I'll take a look on there - hadn't thought to look for any left behind materials up there. Possibly some of these damp areas coincide with the placement of the overlap of another roofing sheet. I was also surprised that the damp patches were on the upper rolls. The fall is not so good -...
