What's the secret to a good interior door?

Thanks for your comments, I didn't even know bearing hinges were a thing. Will be picking up those for sure. I suppose I might as well see if the existing doors are good enough, they are solid wood at least, with a decent gloss coat maybe they'll pass.

What's the secret to a good interior door?

The doors in my house always feel kinda crappy. they don't close nicely, feel thin, feel cheap etc... As I'm about to fit new ones in my own stud walls and the likes, it occurs to me there's a number of factors going on, and I don't know what really matters. I have reasonable solid pine doors...

studwork for a 45 degree cupboard

Hi, I want to build a triangular cupboard into the corner of a room, 1m sides, full room height. For studs on the wall, do I still just use 2x2 etc., or am I better off getting something with a 45 degree angle in it? Off hand I'm aware of 3in Arris rails which are exactly the right shape, but...

    Screeding a poured concrete floor

Sorry, by polystyrene I meant "big messy blocks of white stuff" As you mentioned not adding sand, should there be less sand as it gets thinner in general? A thick screed seems to be a 6:1 mix, should I reduce that to 4:1 or something for 40mm?

    Screeding a poured concrete floor

I admit I don't really know what to say about it. I've attached a photo, showing the membrane being visible in places around the edge of the concrete.

    Screeding a poured concrete floor

Hi, My ex builders have left me with a concrete floor, sitting on 100mm of polystyrene, with the damp course at that poured height. The floor is, on average, 40mm below the floor to which it needs to marry up in some form. What do I do next? Fairly sure I want to put down a thinnish layer of...

Stud wall uprights fixed directly to loft joists?

As in the photo, there are noggins an inch below ceiling height. Doing it this way has meant the the uprights don't need to be measured at any point, which by my measuring skills is a big win. I'd rather the extra noggins were a few mil short here or there rather than the uprights. this way I...

Stud wall uprights fixed directly to loft joists?

Not against it, no. Noggins up high instead, as shown in the photo. If there's a genuine downside, unrelated to time / effort I'd be keen to know still.

Stud wall uprights fixed directly to loft joists?

You didn't even try! I fixed one upright to the wall, one at the other end, then screwed a joist to those two about a foot from the ceiling. From then on each middle joist just rested against the temporary one, and they seem happily plumb and I'm still given to think it's more robust...

Stud wall uprights fixed directly to loft joists?

Building my first few stud walls currently and it seems to be the way that you fix a top joist to the ceiling and then uprights to that. If I have a stud wall going perpendicular to my ceiling / loft joists, wouldn't I be better off fixing the uprights directly to them, and then add noggins at...

Screw length for bricks with holes

Yeah these do look decent... Think I'll jump ship to them after all, thanks!

Screw length for bricks with holes

Tbh I'm not quite sure what I'm worried about. I think it might be that the frames wobble once installed. Maybe the brickies did actually... I've no idea tbh! If not I can imagine a hairbrained scheme to inject some cement in through the drilled hole!

Screw length for bricks with holes

Howdy, I'm looking to fit my own upvc windows soon and thought I had everything I need, however I am wondering if the 100mm and 120mm bolts I have will be suitable. I have these... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00OBFVT7S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RgRPzb0FGD70Z The bricks my walls are made of have...

Removing entire ex-outside wall for new extension

Well we were always knocking through about 40% of the downstairs wall... then there's the new doorway upstairs...

Removing entire ex-outside wall for new extension

But we're making it an internal wall. If has a cavity wall extending out to the side of the house now, gripping onto it. And there's still a metre of wall still external on the front, and half a metre on the back. I'm tempted to think the lateral strength thing is all just in theory, however...

Removing entire ex-outside wall for new extension

I'm not sure if there's another type of roof it could be, but it has front to back beams just like the new roof does. Whilst being 50 years older, and pretty sloppily made, it looks like it's the same type. OK, hadn't thought of lateral stability... I'll certainly be getting a structural...

Removing entire ex-outside wall for new extension

Howdy, I've an extension coming along as pictured, and I'm always looking for more space, more for an en-suite, more for storage... and coupled with the fact that we're having the left side of the downstairs wall removed to have a huge kitchen / diner I'm taking one small thought to another and...

Converting gutter downpipe into new soil pipe

Hi, New extension going in with an En Suite. I'll need a new soil pipe with it, but realised there's already a gutter drain near enough to it. I've been trying to work out if it's connected to the sewer, without as much proof as I think I need... I put a hose down the drain and after a while...
