I have a new softwood unit (redwood i think!) which we want white. I plan to primer/undercoat (dulux trade qdp) and a non gloss finish. I presume i could use satin or eggshell. What is the difference between these two finishes - is it just the sheen level. When would you use one in preference to...

using dulux trade quick drying wood primer/undercoat outside

thanks to you both. It does sound like oil based is the way to go for a job that lasts as opposed to a quick fix.

using dulux trade quick drying wood primer/undercoat outside

thats interesting third eye. I rang dulux (before I read your post!) and they suggested that this product was as good as a solvent based for exterior use. I am not doubting your practical experience, but, could you explain a little further. Thanks

using dulux trade quick drying wood primer/undercoat outside

I have used this as an undercoat on most of my wood (inside) as you dont have to wait too long before glossing. The tub says exterior use is ok - but would you guys recommend it to be used on exterior wood. ie garage door frame or even the pre painted metal door itself . I am wondering how...

    dulux trade supermatt question

I had a kitchen wall plastered(bonding & skim) a week ago and have been advised on here to use supermatt as a finish. Having been advised on many occasions to read the tin (third eye!) , the instructions seem to contradict themselves. It reads'suitable for plaster that is still drying out' and...

Problem using gloss outside in warm weather

zampa, it did cross my mind to leave it rolled, but, the finish on the wood looked like it had hundreds of tiny bubbles. This was using (admittedly) a cheap quality foam roller. Maybe it was it my technique!!. Any comments?

Problem using gloss outside in warm weather

i was painting a friends carport timber with undercoat and dulux trade hi gloss (I know you will ask third eye!!). The timbers were quite large so i rolled the gloss on with the intention of laying off with a brush. It was a warm/humid day and the gloss was drying so quick it was dragging when i...

    Strange Emulsion problem

thanks guys - third eye, just your comment about 'assuming flat wall'. If it is an anaglypta type wall with a bold pattern, do you not bother rubbing down cos of the difficulty or cos there is no need?

growler - its interesting to hear you say 'use matt first' - isnt that what people are suggesting you aviod if possible? not being argumentative here mate - just confused. Your right on the 'this board can give you the willys' comment, but it is still a great source of info. if the board was not...

    Strange Emulsion problem

I realise that you are talking matt over silk, but, are there any issues with silk over silk. Should you still abrade the silk before applying the fresh silk paint.

best fixing to partition walls-easidrive,toggle or plastic?

which fixings provide a more secure fix onto hollow plasterboard walls for say shelves/curtain poles etc. I have used plasplugs heavy duty plasterboard fixings(blue or red plastic) and metal toggles. I am interested in using the metal easi drives. I believe these just cut their own thread rather...
