Fireplace opening and lintel - help

Hi, I am after a little advice. We had a gas fireplace removed a couple of years ago (one of those old ones fitted as a mantel piece all in one kind of thing). Since then we haven't been able to afford to do anything with the opening and it has been boarded up with some hardboard. The house was...

    New or rennovate stair parts

Hi, I'm in a bit of a quandary as to what to do with my staircase. Funds are tight at the moment but whilst I am renovating the hallway, landing and stairwell I'd rather get it right now unless I can postpone some aspects... I've attached photos of the existing stairs so you can see what I...

    Extending a radial circuit

You are totally right the fuse that was removed was for an immersion heater. I think the wires terminate in the airing cupboard/room just off our main bedroom. This circuit also supplied the hall wall light that stopped working once the plumber had disconnected the fuse. Seems to be strange...

    Extending a radial circuit

That's the consumer unit. Yes it needs replacing! I'm starting to think I might leave this to a pro, I'm a confident diyer with a guiding hand but electrics is something I don't want to get wrong . after the questions on here I'm not sure if it's a ring or radial, there seem to be spurs and...

    Extending a radial circuit

Oh and I will be removing the existing wiring between the single socket and the new junction box. I meant to ask is my diagram the best way of extending? Or would it be better running the radial as a branch or even a star radial? Thanks again

    Extending a radial circuit

Hi All, I am looking for some advice in extending the radial circuit in a room in my house. I've never extended a radial circuit before so I'd just like to check a few things. I have done a diagram of the existing and proposed extension. I'd like to add 3 double sockets into a...

    Cistern lid doesn't fit, warped?

Hi, I have just tackled replacing the soil pipe to the stack successfully and fitted a new Armitage shanks Sandringham 21 toilet. However the cistern lid seems to be warped, is this common? It just doesn't sit on top of the cistern properly and wobbles. I'm a bit gutted to be honest, all...

    Drain down sealed system

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply. How do I perform the partial drain of just the downstairs? Do I lock all the upstairs rads, then take off the 3 dowstairs rads and drain individually? Or do I lock all upstairs rads and use the drain point to drain the system? I had the new central...

The valves on the radiator are very old but I was able to remove the radiator. Anyway the Pegler valve at one end wouldn't...

    soil pipe to stack questions

    Replace soil pipe

I'd be much more confident going down this route :-) I'd cut the pipe up in small chunks with a hacksaw as well, with a good blade that is. I'd use a angle grinder but I don't fancy bits of metal flying around.

    Replace soil pipe

Thanks for the replies. It's because it is a 3.25" pipe that is causing major problems on the inside that I have come round to thinking that the best job is to replace the whole pipe to the stack. Reading up on using a core drill I am a bit worried because it looks like it would be safer to...

    Replace soil pipe

Hi, I have decided to replace the the soil pipe coming in to my bathroom so that I can fit a new Armitage shanks Sandringham 21 toilet I have purchased. I am looking for a bit of advice and guidance. The soil pipe in the bathroom is 82mm 3.25, it is very low to the floor the cent...

    New toilet advice

I think this is the way forward rather than a bodge job with two offset connections which I think is what I would need to do. I think I'll get three quotes in. How difficult would it be to do it myself? My only problem would be going through the wall would it be a case of knocking a brick...
