    Electric lightbulb economy

My eldest son visited us last night and ran round the house counting the number of electric light bulbs left on so now I have to do something about them and I need help. To start with we have four wall light bulbs marked, "220-240V50/60Hz24mA" They are approximately 100mm tall, 35mm wide and...

How to check if a stainless steel Wall Starter kit is in place?

I started my bricklaying apprenticeship in 1952 so have been on the trowel for a fair length of time but am long retired. Any extension that I built obviously with correct foundations would not settle. Those x-ray costs are frightening but thanks for the information. I’ve decided to use an angle...

How to check if a stainless steel Wall Starter kit is in place?

I'm interested in buying a property with a new extension that has not been tied into the old part of the building by toothing into the existing older building. Does anything like a mobile x-ray kit exist to check if a wall starter kit was used?

    Insulation questions.

I had to cut into the cavity wall of our bungalow some time ago and found a very loose packing of flock which suggests that the insulation is not that effective so is it possible to actually measure how effective a buildings insulation is and if so what sort of organisation does it? I'm sure...

Cost to reitile and re-roof the white building.

My son is considering buying a top floor flat in the white building but the survey suggests the whole roof will require either retiling or even replacing the entire roof. Would anyone care to suggest what the cost of such work would be.

Many thanks for all of your replies and please accept my apologies for dithering. I will get the wife to sit with me on the computer and we shall make a decision based on the sound advice you offered so many thanks.

    A quality kitchen sink.

I asked the question, “I would like to have a quality kitchen sink installed and don't mind paying but I have no idea what is a quality chicken sink and wonder if any plumber is prepared to make a suggestion.” The answers varied from, “Only you can decide what you think is reasonable.” To, “You...

    A quality kitchen sink.

Thanks for that and the Elba ELK 611 Ceramic White looks right. I know that I said I wanted quality but is £416.00 a reasonable amount to pay when nondescript sinks come in at £100.00.

Apologies, the guvnor hates stainless steel insisting on a white sink with drainer which I should have made clear.

    An old fashioned concrete block.

I lived in a bungalow years ago built between the wars out of secondhand timber from Milton Camp. Eventually it was covered with concrete block walls. These blocks were 6” thick X 9” X 18” were extremely dense and had what I would describe as a, “Knobbly finish” which I suppose was meant...

    Underpinning on a gravel base.

Many thanks for the advice. I'm having nothing to do with remedial work having wrapped my trowel up many years ago. The square where the house is have a number of houses showing settlement cracks. They were built along with a considerable number of other sites for employees of the UKAEA and had...

    Underpinning on a gravel base.

A trench has been dug round a brick built building showing settlement cracks and I noted that the concrete foundations are laying on top of a band of natural gravel. I last worked on such a problem in the 1950s when serving my time as a Bricklayer and we undercut the foundations, laid concrete...

Light weight windows for a metal shed?

As far as I'm concerned the pictures of a window that I saw were just that a WINDOW yet not a single one of those who used it are actually offering WINDOWS. I reject your statement that the emphasis is on glass especially as its actually Perspex. Anyway, I'm still looking for a window.

Light weight windows for a metal shed?

The above picture is of the sort that the Internet is full of which intimates that the item is a window frame and a piece of acrylic and not one of the advertisers that I have contacted actually sell window frames.
