    Information regarding air bricks

I think the house is too old to have been built with a cavity. However, when we had an outside wall in our dining room stripped back to the brick, we noticed that the were like the "typical cavity wall" in this site, and not the "typical solid brick wall". This is something I have been meaning...

    Information regarding air bricks

Hi all, I have a couple of very general questions regarding air bricks. I have an end terrace house built circa 1895. I can see two air bricks on the outside; one in the middle of the front, and one in the middle of the gable wall, both at ground level. I know these ones are to vent under...

Advice for attaching shelves to brick wall w/out cleats

Might I also add, I am something of an amateur at carpentry. I don't have access to any machinery or fancy tools. I built the shelves downstairs using a mitre saw, hand saw, drill and a few other simple tools.

Advice for attaching shelves to brick wall w/out cleats

Hi guys, I'm starting a new project in my house, to build some built in bookcases in my alcoves in my bedroom. I have some "floating" shelves down in my living room using this method: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cm/popularmechanics/images/1X/floatingshelf-illo.jpg However, the...

Cracks appearing in ceiling and hallway wall

Hi guys, I bought an old Victorian end terrace (built circa 1895) in the summer there. This is a pretty close diagram of the layout: Over the past couple of weeks, we have noticed quite large (large in terms of length), quite noticeable cracks appearing in a couple of locations about...

    Internal insulating render/coating?

Hi all, I was wondering if there are any coatings that can be to internal walls to increase the insulation? My house is solid wall construction, and internal plaster boarding is not an option as the rooms are not huge and have original cornicing and would just cause too much disruption. I've...

Applying plaster over highly porous render

WBA, is that Water Based Acrylic? I like the sound of this and the Blue Grit, if I'm right, they have silicon (or something) in them which gives a good mechanical key? Where can I get either of these?

Applying plaster over highly porous render

Hi all, So I am needing to replaster the interior of my porch after removing the lining paper that was up. The bottom half of the wall looks to have been recently plastered but the top was left for whatever reason. There was a very shiny looking finish on the top half and some of the plaster...

Plastering over inside wall treated with Thompsons WaterSeal

Ok, so going to go with the spatterdash. Will just using sand and cement be enough, or will I need to add an additive (like the SBR)? Also, what is the best technique to apply the spatterdash? Is there a tool for it or is it simply throwing some s+c hard against the wall?

Plastering over inside wall treated with Thompsons WaterSeal

Thanks for the replies. How would I apply a splatterdash to the wall? If I went for the bonding option, what would you use for this? Is this applied to the wall before applying a sand and cement render? The damp specialist arrived today and gave me a packet of the correct water proofer...

Plastering over inside wall treated with Thompsons WaterSeal

Hi, I have a damp problem in my dining room. I was seeing large patches on the wall appear when there was rain. I was told by a damp specialist to remove the plaster to the brick, repoint the brick, apply a water proofer and replaster the wall. I have done the stripping, and repointing...

    Capping chimney(s)

Hi Richard, Thanks forth reply. What do you mean by "proper vents"? Is there a specific type or way to vent a fireplace? Also thanks for the link, that's exactly what I'm after. Thanks.

    Capping chimney(s)

Hi all, We've just moved into an old house (end terrace) which has four chimney pots (the chimney is on the end wall). Only one of the fireplaces are used, in the front room there is a wood burning stove, but the other three fireplaces have been bricked up and plastered. We noticed a few...
