    Star Lighting in ceiling

Thanks for that. I want to take power from the loft somewhere as the power supply box will sit there. Where can I take power from? Can I simply tap into a lighting circuit which supplies the light in that room? It's going to be a remote control unit so switched on and off with that.

Sanding newly plastered walls prior to painting?

Can I simply use an appropriate grade sanding block or should I be using something else? I was watching 60min makeover the other week and one of the guys was using a sanding sheet on the end of a stick to do a wall - is that common and where can I get that?

    Routing AV cables

Hi I've just bought some tv unit accessories and due to a change of plan the lower tv unit is too low to sit the TV on and so it will now be going on the wall so I need to run up all the cables I'm going to need. The wall is a solid exterior one with the garage behind it which is now converted...

    Changing colour of tile grout

Is there a technique to removing the top layer of grout between tiles and replacing with a different colour? I have creme coloured tiles in the kitchen which I hate but may well keep them but the brown grouting (to match the worktop) is driving me nuts - I hate it! So I was wondering if I could...

    Restoring laminate/engineered wood.

I have a place which has a laminate type/engineered wood (not sure) flooring fitted which looks quite dull at the moment even after cleaning. It's a dark walnut colour. Is there any product that can be applied that will bring up a little shine to it and mask scratches? Nothing glossy just satin...

    Star Lighting in ceiling

Are the strands visible in the ceiling when off? Also how did you work out how much to push them through from the loft until they are flush with the ceiling and how did you secure them in place?

Installing a mains supplied Door Bell

Because he's being paid someone else to carry out the other jobs to a fixed price and not willing to take on any more jobs within that quote. That would leave me to fit the bell, so would it be safe to simply take a feed from a lighting circuit that is permanently live and locate the transformer...

Installing a mains supplied Door Bell

Can someone advise how I can feed power to a main's powered door bell please? I need to install one in a place I'm renovating and all carpets are stripped out and walls will get plastered afterwards so I can channel into the walls if needed. I assume there will be a step down transformer that...

    Star Lighting in ceiling

Hi I want to create a starlight ceiling in my son's bedroom and seen it done somewhere else but the owner of that house can't remember the details of the guy who installed it. Basically the stars (LED's/fibre optics not sure which) are invisible during the day but light up really bright when on...

Socket problem - corrosion on 3-pin plug?

Good job I didn't listen to the mrs then (as I ever go!), and simply buy a new kettle to stop the fishy smell. A new plug attached and plugged into a different wall socket and it's working fine. Just waiting to nip down to B&Q and pick up a new socket and check the wiring behind it too.

Socket problem - corrosion on 3-pin plug?

Hi just wanted to get some advice on a problem I just noticed today. Recently our cordless Morphy Richords kettle has been making a nasty fishy smell when boiling the water. It wasn't always present but most times at least. We thought the kettle itself was at fault somehow and I cleaned the...

    Radiator problem

Forgive my ignorance but what are TRV's? The boiler was low on water recently which caused it to shut down but once I filled it up all was fine apart from that particular radiator not working.

    Radiator problem

Ok here's my problem. The radiator in the kitchen has stopped working recently but all others in the flat are ok. The pipes leading to it are cold - so what is wrong with the system? They're connected up to a combi boiler.
