    U bend in soil vent?

Sadly this is the first time I've been up there - and the builder's warranty was only for 2 years. The vent pipe and vent aren't even connected on our other Taylor Wimpey new build on the same estate. No nasty niffs in the loft though so I've left it.

    ...so it's definitely wrong then?

    U bend in soil vent?

I live in a Martin Grant new build. I'm trying to find the source of a leak in the roof and this is the first time I've been up there. The soil vent pipe is connected to the vent cover on the sloping roof - I can see plenty of daylight, and having fitted Velux windows in the past, I can't...

    Decking screws that don't snap!

Whilst I left a gap between my decking boards it wasn't big enough and they've expanded up tight to each other. The water collects and it's virtually airtight so things have already started to go mouldy 6 months after laying. I'm taking the boards up, spray the mould with bleach and then going...

Alternative to bitumen to glue felt

the ridge strip of felt that was nailed to our shed has blown off. I want to glue the next piece as well as nail but £20 for a tin of bitumen when I only need a drop is a bit steep. Thoughts on an alternate please? Silicon sealant?

    Mandatory decking slope?

Aye, the structure's shape is fixed that's for sure. I'm sure I could force a few mm's play at the wall bolts which is going to translate to about 2 or maybe 3cm at the other side of the deck 3.6 metres away.

    Mandatory decking slope?

That was partially my rationale too

    Mandatory decking slope?

I've laid my decking horizontal. I know a slope is recommended but it was easier to lay like that. Turns out the surface tension on water sitting on oiled decking is a lot plus some of the joists appear to be a bit bowed so there are low spots in the decking. I can even out the low spots -...

    Non-wood balustrades

I bought two ProBuilt Aluminium railing kits for my decking from Wickes (£60 each). One pack had missing and damaged parts. It looks like there aren't any more available from Wickes (or elsewhere for that matter???) I've got an awful lot of wood going on already in terms of decking and...

how to join sleepers for raised bed?

I've gone off the idea of using the 1.8m sleepers in my original post as they are too chunky for my garden. Instead I'm probably going to use joists that I can buy long enough so that they won't need to be joined.....it's delaying the inevitable though as the planters at the bottom of the garden...

how to join sleepers for raised bed?

You must use something else the surely to join the lengths together though right? Horizontal bracing? Vertical bracing? Spiked into the ground?

how to join sleepers for raised bed?

Thanks for the tip - 250 is really long - what depth into the timber do people aim for? 50mm? 100mm?

how to join sleepers for raised bed?

Found them for 45p each (150mm) if I get 50 - which is about what I'll need so will go for that. How did you join them length wise? with the same screws at and angle?

how to join sleepers for raised bed?

I'm planning on using these 1.8m x 95mm x 195mm planed chamfered "sleepers" from Wickes https://www.wickes.co.uk/Green-Planed+Chamfered-Sleeper---95-x-195mm-x-1-8m/p/145249 ...to build raised beds one and two thicknesses high. Three questions please. How do I join them length wise? Are dowels...

    Easier decking?

I'm going to be laying decking - likely to be good quality softwood but also considering composite. The nominal size is 3m*4m but I'll let my decking and wood choice decide exact dimensions. One long side is anchored to a wall. I want the decking to be as close the ground as possible. I don't...

    Flapping Ventillation Grille

Yes, Martin Grant. Hmm I’ll try but unless it’s a fairly clear cut issue they aren’t interested. The site manager even muttered under his breath they’d be noisy at handover time! One of the rooms won’t warm up either and the heating setup is unsuitable but they won’t even enter into conversation...
