Shower mixer tap only producing lukewarm water.

I removed the mixer valve and found an o ring unseated. It had migrated half an inch up the body of the valve. I replaced it for a new one (47p) and now the shower works fine. Thanks for your help Harry.

Shower mixer tap only producing lukewarm water.

Hi, I'm only getting lukewarm water from my shower mixer tap even when the temp knob is turned to the max. The water from the basin tap is fine. Here's a couple of photos: The top valve turns the shower on and the bottom valve controls the temp. Does this look like a thermostatically...

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Missed your post Mumroast. I said 35+ cis that's how long I'vo owned the house. If it's the original door, it could be 135 years old. Not much of a carpenter si won't be using the wood. Going to the dump tomorrow, unless you're anywhere near Sutton and wanna take it off my hands

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

It certainly had a lot of sun over its 35 yr + lifetime. I've used a 12 yr woodstain which claims high UV prorection after first dipping the top & bottom in wood preservative. Gave 2 coats of varnish on each side and 4 at the edges. Fitted it this morning and it seems fine. Thanks all for the...

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Thanks for the tips Delux. Yes WNI, it looks good but maybe I've over engineered it a bit. Damn thing is pretty heavy so I'm concerned the hinges will not support the weight. I'm using 3 hinges, they come to just over halfway across the door. I can't really go any bigger as I am limited by the...

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Hi all, Here's the door I came up with. The crossmembers are of 5 1/2" x 1 1/4" and frame 2 3/4" x 1 1/4" planks i rescued from a bed I was getting rid of and brace the planks of kiln dried T&G highlighted earlier. I treated and varnished the finished door with the products shown in the third...

Stains showing through even though Zinsser and 2 coats of emulsion used

Just checked with Grok. BIN does have better stain blocking qualities. As it is oil based, I guess I need a sponge roller no?

    PIR board as loft insulation

Hi all, my loft currently has 100mm of fibreglass insulation that has been there for 32 yrs+. I have heard that 270mm is the new standard depth and was gonna just top it up to that level but wanna ask a couole of questions first: Should I first replace the old insulation or will it be OK not to...

Stains showing through even though Zinsser and 2 coats of emulsion used

Hi all, as the title says. Here are some pics. Only on 2 walls but those walls were the most stained. I guess I shd use another coat of Zinsser and two more coats of emulsion. Could that work? Anything stronger than Zinsser I shd try? Thanjs, Chris.

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Thanks for your detailed responses Mr Rusty. Here are a few photos of the old door/frame. It doesn't seem repairable to me. I note the old door has 6"x1" planks as cross bracing but no frame as such. I guess I could copy this design incorporating a 3x1" frame and diagonal bracing. I imagine the...

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Just why is it unsuitable as the door to an old o/s loo currently used to store garden tools? Would it be suitable if it were pressure treated? The cladding is the same thickness as the old door - which is totally knackerd btw. I do intend to frame the door with 1x 1&1/2" battening, putting a...

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Thanks for all the replies. I just bought some of this T&G and some bracing battens. Though not pressure treated it says it is suitable for outside if treated. I'm thinking of using some black 'barn paint' I have. It is waterbased. Maybe a thinned down 1st coat and a second coat.or would stain &...

    Keeping the weeds down.

Hi all, I have a house which has had tarmac laid around the outside with an 8" wide gully cut to allow the air bricks to breathe. The problem I have is that weeds are continually growing in the gully. How can I permanantly get rid of this problem? Chris.

Which wood tio make an external door out of?

Hi all, I need to replace a door to an outside loo that is now used for storage. The current door is 6ft tall by 70 cm wide but I can only find 90cm wide doors, so I thought I'd make one. What kind of wood shd I use to do this? I'm thinking tounge and groove in a gate style. Any tips relating to...

    Painting a banister

I got a badly chipped banister which I want to restore. I like the brown colour but am unsure about what to use to get it back to looking good. Should I just undercoat and use a brown paint or would I be better off using a coloured varnish or maybe a paint with a top coat of clear varnish?

    deciding on type of carpet

Thanks Scally & Daz That flotex stuff is expensive isn't it? Reason I quoted the carpet and underlay that I did is cos I've used both in a rented flat and still looking good after 5 yrs but that may be cos I got a good (single) tenant who works a lot. Thanks for the tip re underlay Daz. I'll...

    deciding on type of carpet

Hi, I've got a 2 bed house to carpet. 4 rooms, a hall and stairs. I reckon 68M (4M x 17M) of carpet will do it. I have posted the job on MyBuilder and specified the following: Carpet - Fantastic Plus-Mottle or similar...

    Wood or UPVC

Thanks for answering (twice) Harry. I posted the same q in the carpentry and windows&doors threads to see if carpenters and window fitters would have the same opinion. I get that upvc should require less maintenance but I have had an experience of a upvc door expanding when subject to direct...
