    Earth bonding question

Thanks for the reply. I already read those but wondered if the earth bonding wire was considered as a cable in that context. Of course I will be running the ring in the safe zones created by the socket locations. Those regulations seem to be about avoiding electrocution by drilling into a cable...

    Earth bonding question

How should I run the bonding wire then as the gas and water are in the kitchen placed above a solid floor. I was planning to run the bonding wire surface clipped behind the kitchen units and then behind the skirting (to get across the solid floor) and then under the floorboards. Steve.

Routing 32A ring main through floor joists

Thanks for the help. I planned to run them through the joists down the hallway to the kitchen. I can just about reach 20% as the hallway is 44 inch wide and the total joist length is 200 inches. But the hallway narrows to 36 inch and then I cannot reach 20% (only 18% from the wall). Am I missing...

Don't think doing work for someone else could be classed as DIY, that would be DIFSE not covered by the regulations. Steve.

Routing 32A ring main through floor joists

What is an acceptable method of running a ring main through floor joists? Can I bore just one hole through each joist and run both cables for the ring through that? Or one smaller hole for each cable. The cable will run the length of the hallway to the kitchen so there's probably about 10 joists...

Don't know as this is my first notification. I plan to pay the notification fee of £77 + VAT and no more. If they want to charge extra for the inspection I will refer them to Part P 1.24 - 1.27. It will be up to them if they want to go to court over it. Actually they may not be up to speed with...

    Earth bonding question

Hi All, I am also putting in a 32A ring to the kitchen (solid floor). Is it acceptable to run the 10mm earth bonding wire through the metal socket boxes via the safe zones with the 2.5mm T+E for the ring ? The other alternative is to run the earth behind the skirting board along one of the...

    Local Authority Buildings Control Officer

The form sent out by the LABC was in fact incorrect, misleading and not to current legislation. I referred to Part P myself April 2006 version and that has a whole section devoted to DIYers (1.24 - 1.27). Basically it says you can do the work yourself and they are responsible to make sure that...

Does anyone know the procedure regarding the BCO? I did phone them to say that I might be doing the kitchen ring main. They sent me a form with a note to say the fee was £77 + VAT. Not sure what will happen next if I send the form back. Who will inspect the work? Will the BCO come out to inspect...

    Earth bonding question

Thanks for the help. I understand the correct method now...Connect to the gas pipe then cut out a short 15mm section of insulation and clamp the exposed copper to the water pipe and then connect at the CU end..Single uncut piece of wire. Steve.

does "it was like that when bought the place" work

Not sure really but one thing to watch out for..I did buy a new Consumer Unit just recently and it had a date of manufacture stamp on the inside of the cover. Don't know if anyone would go as far as inspecting that though.

    Earth bonding question

My incoming Gas and Water are in the Kitchen under the sink. Neither is earth bonded to the Consumer unit which is by the front door. My question is this. Do I run 2 x 10mm green/yellow to the CU, that's one from each pipe. Or should I connect a short length of 10mm green/yellow between the gas...

    Kitchen Wiring

Thinking about fitting a new kitchen. My plan for the mains wiring is as follows. Above worktop level - make chases in the plaster down to the brick for the cables (in the safe zones of course) fix the cables with T+E clips that go into pin type rawl plugs in the chases. Chase the plaster down...

How do I fix this safely?

Already got lots of sockets as our house used to be used as offices. Two ring mains one upstairs and one downstairs. Cannot afford a total rewire at the moment. From what I can make out the dodgyness was introduced by the previous owners who converted from the office to a house (So the shower...

    Upgrading cooker connection

Hi. I agree that the wiring is a bit of a mess. I was hoping to do as much upgrading work as possible myself and then get a qualified electrician to inspect/test/certify. I plan to run a new ring main into our kitchen that I am upgrading as well as fitting the new CU. I am a degree qualified...

How do I fix this safely?

OK I'll cut back the T+G in that area and fit an accessible 30A junction box. It will look messy but no other reasonable options. I will be upgrading to a new consumer unit very soon with RCD protection. Just bought a 10 way split load Wylex from B+Q for £69 (including 10 switched 13A double...

How do I fix this safely?

could fit a junction box but that would end up being hidden by the tongue and groove. Is that acceptable? The MCB is 30A so I guess I need a 30A junction box. Steve.

How do I fix this safely?

Please explain about the 45A MCB. I am new to electrics but have been doing some reading. Do you mean that it should be in the first location on the bus-bar next to the isolating switch? Steve.
