A bit of rot...are these joists ok?

OK, so I'm completely renovating our downstairs bathroom. The house is an old Scottish traditional building of granite with lath and plaster walls. One of the effects of lath and plaster was for the plaster to slip down behind the laths during application and onto the underfloor joists encasing...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

Not ideal I know. "Oh I like the idea of a concealed shower head" says the missus. Mind you to be fair so did I. The good news (ish) is that it's a downstairs bathroom with suspended floor. Yeah, there's a thermostatic shower valve to fit as well which also leaves a lot down to interpretation as...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

Thanks Terry. The black part are two rubber washers. So I think oldbuffer is right and it's expected to be fitted through a hole and accessed on the other side to lock it. I have the studs all exposed bathroom side so I'll fit in some ply, then tile backer and tiles over it. Drill a hole, insert...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

Lol, that will teach me to post before I check for replies oldbuffer....you beat me to it! Given the choices I think I may go with the option to fit from the other side. Heck, it's only more work and old lath and plaster mess isn't it? Thankyou for the additional alternative info, I now have a...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

Just a quick additional thought....I guess looking at the fixings a little more on the head - in particular the large nut, I'm now thinking they expect you to fit the head through a hole in the tiles and backer, lock it into place with the locking nut and finally plumb it in. All assuming I have...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

No bloody instructions whatsoever! There are some downloadable instructions, but they tell you all about aftercare and little else: https://images.victorianplumbing.co.uk/images/pdf/CSSH01instruction.pdf But am I basically right in assuming the head screws into a flush with tile elbow plate...

How to fit concealed shower head to wall plate elbow

Hi all. Ok, so I'm just about to refit our bathroom and I'm pretty much ok with most of it, but looking at the shower head (pic below) there are no instructions on how to fit. I am presuming it screws straight into the wall plate elbow but it's the detail of this I'm not sure about. Again, I...

Lintel replacement advice - low load bearing

Good man Ken. Solid, sensible advice which makes perfect sense. Much appreciated.

Lintel replacement advice - low load bearing

Thanks Ken that was good advice and much appreciated. I am a little surprised that no other timber appears affected, but there is nothing that is detectable. It's especially surprising as those beams are riddled right through. Maybe different materials? Then again I have no idea what timber...

Lintel replacement advice - low load bearing

Hi all. OK, so I'm in the middle of a major bathroom refit and whilst examining the external plaster (lath and plaster), I decided it was no way strong enough or well enough constructed for full wall tiles, so off it all came today. One nasty shock was that the window lintel had been seriously...

Difference between Aquapanel and Tile Panel

Thanks SFK. Indeed they do look identical, same weight and everything. On the back of that I've snapped them up. Cheers.

Difference between Aquapanel and Tile Panel

So I will be refurbing our bathroom and trying to settle on a tile backer for the shower. I was all sold on Aquapanel but after I contacted my local Travis Perkins they didn't have any, but did have Knauf 'Tile Panel' which is on offer. I can't find any info on Knauf website, so wondered what...

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

Thanks Chappers. Whatever ply I use, I presume it has to be marine ply? There is a considerable cost saving to be had with other grades!

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate your time and advice. In that case 12mm ply it is then. I will be using flex8ble adhesive and grout for sure yes. Looks like another fortune on screws then. My last job was a very large decking area where I got through 1200 screws! As for the toilet, just...

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

OK, here are a couple of pics of the floor. As I say, they are solid and fairly flat apart from a few areas where the boards have been cut for access. What do you think? On a separate note, but with regards to what you said Vinn, how do people get around the issue of tiling under the toilet...

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

Thanks for the continued advice guys, much appreciated. To be honest the reason I settled on 18mm ply was after reading various info out there in interwebland. Though I would not be surprised if I dreamt it....such is my brain these days. I'll post a pic tomorrow. The floor is mostly level and...

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

Thanks chappers but the existing floor is not the best. It's solid enough, but it's over 100 years old and a little hit and miss.

How to deal with raised floor after tiling

Thanks guys. The problem is that if I use 18mm ply and typically 8mm tiles plus cement I think even 25mm is unavoidable. The other side is carpet atm, but will be laminate.
