    Wall hung sink support

Hoping for some advice please. I am replacing a pedestal sink with a wall hung sink, attaching it to a internal hollow plasterboard wall. I have read many posts about the necessity to add some horizontal noggins behind the plasterboard. My challenge is that my wall is only 50 cm wide and there...

Best way to smooth sand and cement repair

Thank you for all the tips. I think I will apply the mortar round the manhole, smooth as best I can, leave for about one hour, then smooth the mortar with a trowel dipping it in a bucket of water every few stokes to help get the mortar really smooth. Practice makes perfect!

Best way to smooth sand and cement repair

Thanks KenGMac and 23vc, much appreciate your advice. Yes, I am using mortar. A bucket of sand and cement mix from Wickes which you just add water to. When I have done a similar job before, I used a trowel to get the mortar around the manhole cover and managed to get it fairly smooth. But just...

    Fluorescent ceiling light in kitchen

Thanks for the suggestions, all very helpful. I'm not keen to make a new hole in the ceiling...it's not my house so trying for minimal disruption. At least, it seems, I am not missing an obviously simple solution, which is reassuring, so really appreciate all the feedback. Think I will shop...

    Fluorescent ceiling light in kitchen

Thanks ktuludays. Unfortunately the control gear (if that's the right name) is attached to the inside centre of the baton, so I can't drill through the centre. I was thinking about putting a couple of spacers/rubber washers when attaching the baton to the ceiling, but conscious this would then...

    Fluorescent ceiling light in kitchen

Hi I am replacing a fluorescent ceiling kitchen light. The existing light has a central access point for the wiring in the baton so this can fed straight into the baton. The new light has 2 access points but they are on the left and on the right. As a result, I am having difficulty running the...

Changing a light bulb on a Ducal Welsh Dresser

It's actually just 2 straight prongs. It looks like the same as a G4 although the gap between the pins is less and the pins are shorter. Not sure if that is still a G4. It is marked as OSRAM 64415 which suggests on Google it's a G4. I will take a trip to the local lighting shop to try and match...

Changing a light bulb on a Ducal Welsh Dresser

I have managed to remove the complete fitting by bending back the 3 tabs and tapping gently from above with a hammer and small piece of wood. Once out, I could see that in fact, the plastic outer ring (photo 1) was removable as it was clipped in, however, access to prising this out would have...

Changing a light bulb on a Ducal Welsh Dresser

Wow, thanks everyone for such quick replies and for the suggestions. The chrome ring (from the underside) seems to be held firm and I have not been able to twist or turn it. I have tried to lever it gently, but there is no movement at all. There are 3 metal tabs in the recess above, so I think...

Changing a light bulb on a Ducal Welsh Dresser

Hi, Hope someone can help me please. The light on our Ducal Welsh Dresser has stopped working so I would like to replace it but am unsure how to access it. The power comes from a transformer that is then fed through the top of the dresser and the bulb and cover are in a recess in the top of...

Old Samsung phone been in the washing machine

Hi, yes, thanks, I have tried charging it a few times, but nothing at all when plugged in. Left charging for a few hours and nothing working. Any way of easily identifying if it's the batttery or not, apart from getting another battery?

Old Samsung phone been in the washing machine

I have a very old Samsung e2121b phone (ok, you can stop laughing!) that went in the washing machine a few months ago. It doesn't work now. Completely dead. Nothing hapens when you try to turn it on. I took it apart at the time and dried it all out but it didn't help. Just wondering if it is...

    Rotting wooden garage door posts

Thanks. I am actually having a new electric roller door fitted and the fitter said they would attach 2 new wooden posts behind the existing rotten posts, attaching to the brick pillars, then clad both old and new wooden posts, attaching the new roller door to the new wooden posts. Just had a...

    Rotting wooden garage door posts

Hi, The bottom half of my wooden external garage door posts are rotting. Replacing the posts competely is not possible for various reasons. My question is, if the posts are covered with pvc cladding, will the old wooden posts continue to rot, assuming they will not be exposed to the weather...

Logic 24 condensing boiler - frequent noise when using hot water

Hope someone can advise please. My son bought a flat which has a Logic 24 condensing boiler. The boiler is around 5 to 6 years old. In the last year it has frequently started to make a horrible hammering/banging noise when drawing hot water either from the kitchen or from the bathroom. Also...

    Internal archway - squaring off

All great advice, thanks! Most neighbours seem to still have their arches. I expect once I have done mine the others may follow! Arches are a bit 80's aren't they?! Main things I have learned here from the forum is to cut out the arch very carefully, then replace with plasterboard and skim on...
