    Terminating connection

Sorted! Found that the bell cable was running into the garage. Pulled it back into the garage away from the bell push and have extended it and pushed it back through. All working! I didn’t have any bell cable so just used some CAT 5 cable - is this OK? Or should I replace with some proper bell...

    Terminating connection

I don’t suppose you can recall the model that you have? Sadly, soldering won’t work, what’s left of the wiring is too far in the brickwork for me to even try.

    Terminating connection

Yeah it’s definitely mains, it says 230v inside the chime and I think the transformer is in the chime itself.

    Terminating connection

Annoyingly, I went to replace the push button of my wired doorbell today and have snapped off the wires and there’s no give. The chime is wired to the mains, so in terms of replacement, the ideal would be a mains powered chime with a wireless push button...but these don’t seem to exist! So...

    Concrete stuck in duct

It’s a good 8 inches down now. Pulling the wire doesn’t work. If I whack with it a chisel/hammer I’m afraid it will just go down further. Any idea how far developers would bury these ducts - it’s a new build house. As far down as the foundations?

    Concrete stuck in duct

Hi all - OpenReach came round yesterday to install my new fibre broadband line. Annoyingly there is concrete stuck in the duct where the phone line comes into the house so they can’t proceed. I really don’t want to have to dig the duct out. Does anyone have any genius ideas about how I shift...

    Using outdoor socket permanently?

Just to match the other outside lights on my house and the others on the development.

    Using outdoor socket permanently?

Hi again, the socket is behind a locked gate and mostly we want light there as the bin/recycling boxes are there (and it’s pitch round the side of the house). As long as there’s nothing wrong with plugging the light into the socket permanatly then I’m happy. My only worry is that I did once...

    Outside Lights - Part P

Yes, I don’t even like downlights. They were put in by the house builder, we hardly ever use them as we prefer to use table/floor lamps to light rooms.

    Outside Lights - Part P

Super thanks. I have: - 22 internal downlights - 6 pendants (total 78w) - 4 outside lights (total 18w) Annoying I can’t see the bulb rating on the downlights as I can’t get the bulb out! See pic, should I unscrew those 3 little screws? Or can I safely assume that as LEDs they’re unlikely to...

    Outside Lights - Part P

Thank you. Why is type C an unusual choice for a house?

    Outside Lights - Part P

Hi, so the existing outdoor light is on the Hager MCB that’s in the off position on the pic (Ground Floor Lighting). Which I think is rated at 10amp? I need to work out what the current load is on that circuit. Am I right that the maximum load would be 230v x 10 * 66% = 1,518? And that I...

    Outside Lights - Part P

Great thank you. A perhaps silly question, but the lights will be installed on wood cladding. The house builder already installed the existing one on the cladding, so I presume there’s no safety issue with that? The lights will be something like this...

    Outside Lights - Part P

Hi, I have an outdoor light with an inbuilt PIR. The house is opposite a field so at night it’s pitch black and one light is not adequate. I can see the cable in the garage that passes through the external wall to feed the light. What I want to do is basically remove the existing light and...

    UFH house seems cold

Thanks Dan. I’m afraid I’m not so technical as to be able to answer those questions. However, it’s a new build house and my neighbour has exactly the same house with boiler and UFH. He popped round, I showed him the boiler firing up and down in temperature and he confirmed that his boiler...

    UFH house seems cold

I’ve been able to spend some time again looking at this and something I’ve noticed. Even though the UFH heating loops have been calling for heat all day, the boiler fires up to about 70c, then stops firing and the temp drops to about 38c and keeps repeating the loop. Each cycle takes about 4...

Laying cable in driveway drainage channel?

Thanks, I’ll take a look. From memory, the gulley wouldn’t be accessible to life out, there is a small “service” hatch that lifts out but the rest has been block paved in except for a thin (approx. 1 inch) gap for the water to run into. Perhaps I’ll post a pic to help explain better...

Laying cable in driveway drainage channel?

Hi, I am planning on putting two lighting bollards at the entrance of my driveway. The easiest feed is from the garage but in order to power both lights, somehow I need to cross a cable across the driveway! There’s a drainage channel at the entrance of the driveway to capture water run-off...

    Programmable element for towel rail/heater

Hi again, I have now picked up my new Fused Timer Spur Switch. On the back of the old one (showed connected in the pic) it’s labelled as to which is load/supply so should be easy for me to wire. However there are two earth wires as you can see. I presume that I just connect these to the...
