Foundations / coursing blocks /oversite / slab insulation

Trying to get my head straight so when groundworker arrives to start on 31m2 extension I have a clue... much appreciate any tips My plot is very flat and I can just achieve the 150mm minimum between ground level and tying in DPC with existing. FOUNDATIONS 18m long foundations - because of...

    Reclaiming bricks

10 year old extension is being enlarged so I have a lot of bricks potentially to re-use. Fortunately the last builder put the bricks in upside down and they are coming our very clean. They were also laid mid-summer which I believe helps too. Do I need to clean off the very fine residue or...

Solid floor slab (extension) without final screed?

Okay all good advice made me realise I should stick with conventional screed floor, obviously much safer.

Solid floor slab (extension) without final screed?

Just wondering about feasibility of laying a concrete slab to domestic extension in one hit with no final screed? So, less excavation (a rougher final finish which might be okay if it's to be tiled). Anyone had experience of doing a floor like this? 100?mm C25 concrete (with mesh...

    RSJ sizing?

I need to install a beam under a small section of semi-flat roof, it is the side wall of a single storey extension which has a simple pitched roof with a flat section at its top. The width of wall I will remove is 2.8m wide and currently supports only some pitched roof joists - the ceiling...

How to fit flat roof joists into/across big catnic lintel

Thanks Frank and good point about the insulation. I've just had another word with Catnic and they say these lintels def shouldn't be used in this way. The strength of the lintel can't be relied upon if it isn't installed correctly, so, that means I'll need to use a much heavier RSJ I think.

How to fit flat roof joists into/across big catnic lintel

I have a sort of detail form my SE (who I can't now get hold of). But I don't really understand exactly how the flat roof joists will fit into/on these CX90/100 insulated lintels. Catnic actually has told me these types of lintel are not suitable for this type of flat roof because their...

Detail where cavity wall joins single skin wall?

The drawing shows the new cavity wall (full fill insulation in blue) coming down to join an existing single skin utility room (red). Any ideas best way to join the inner skin blockwork to the single skin? If I straight join it I create a 'thermal-bridge'. If I finish it say, 100mm away...

Flat roof, 45 degree rafters what hangers do I use?

Hi Chippie, you've made me think, I really don't need to do this, I just can run the flat roof joists at 90 degrees and make the angle adjustments with the firrings above. this is so the fall changes on the 45 degree. I can screw in some 45 degree noggins to support the 45 degree cut...

Flat roof, 45 degree rafters what hangers do I use?

It is flat roof and I've laid out the rafters to match the falls (so the change in fall occurs on the 45 degree diagonal line). On top of rafters will be the 1:60 firrings, plus a deck of 18mm plywood prior to installation of a warm roof. The rafters will be fixed using hangers, but how do...

Best way to end internal drain run inside kitchen

New single storey extension is going to cover existing very shallow manhole that serves my kitchen sink/dishwasher/wash machine so it will be come internal. It is end of run (my drains only) so I'd ideally like to replace it with a much smaller sealed cover, preferably inc. some sort of...

I've got to build regs full plans approval for a 31m2 single storey orangery (a 5500 x 4500 area plus a 3000 x 1600 return . It has a lot of glass - a flat roof, a glass lantern, almost two glass walls and three decent opening windows on the longest wall. I'm using Express Bifold for all...
