grrrr.. still can't fix my houses water hammer, so what next

I've just been fushing toilets, opening taps etc to check out syptoms. It seems if there is any water 'draw' from the mains, one toilet cistern valve 'whistles'. turning on/off cold taps gives a 'clonk' the location being hard to locate. Flushing on of the other toilets gives a...

grrrr.. still can't fix my houses water hammer, so what next

Water hammer keeps cropping up in the mains feed coldwater system in my house. It used to effect the downstairs toilet cistern, so I replaced the valve with fluidmaster type. that fixed it for a bit. Then the upstairs toilet cistern whistled and whined when filling, fixed that with fluid...

Candy Washing machine --small stains !

I had a machine that did that. The engineer told me it was a leaking bearing at the back of the machine. I was better to replace the machine than repair.

    Customer that won't pay...again!

I've been to the small claims court a few times. ( one the right side of the law!) The corspondance you sent to the customer will form an important part of the case. I would write to him explaining exactly what you did, (work wise). State that you also gave him a pensioners discount...

    garage ceiling insulation

I've got the same problem with my garage extension! The room above has some loft space but also sloping sides as it is parltly built into the roof above. It was built fully insulated with the marvelous multilayered foil insulation ( equiv to loads of rockwoll insulation) - but it doesn't...

holding tiles in place, how? ( top of window 'reveal')

no not meant personally! The sticky was talking about tiling beneath a row of fixed tiles, not upsidedown, under a window reveal. I couldn't see 'what' to stick 'where' with the gaffa tape, as it would all be upside down and likely to drop off!. I use tape and a prop!

drain camera survey is it a DIY job?

We have possible drain problems at our house. The local rumour is that when the houses were built (1992), the ground works contractors tied their horses up each morning before starting work! The out come is that the undergroud drainage is set deep ( 5 ft down) , and various neighbours...

holding tiles in place, how? ( top of window 'reveal')

I've just about finished re-tiling my bathroom, just the tricky bits to go! Where the window is set in the wall ( window reveal?) I have tiled the window ledge and sides, but how do I hold the tiles in place on the underside of the lintel, until the adhesive goes off? How do I stop the...

insulating wooden floor above garage- vapour barrier needed?

I'm off to my mum's next week and one job I have is to insulate the bedroom floor ( it is above a cold garage ). I'm going to lift as few floor boards as I can. I was planning on using rock wool slabs or the roll insulation. Should I leave an air gap on both sides of the insulation (between...

Is an alarm practical with pets?

I'd like to add a wired alarm to my house. I'll go for a zone system that I can add in stages as it takes me ages to finish projects. Is it practical as I have pets? (Cat and parrot if you ask!). I'm concerned about 'false alarms'. The bird is in her cage, but the cat wanders around the...

    Acer Palmatum

I Know that in plants the green chlorophil is more efficient at converting the sunlight to neutrients than the red stuff is. The plant may have been struggleing with not enough sun, so it produced more of the green chlorophil to cope.

I'm not a 'building' tradesman, but I am self emploied, offering a localy based service  I find Yell pages works well, thompsons are rubish. Yell.com was trying to sell me advertising for 300 quid to be ranked to for a search in the area, but the catch............. a person would need...

    Crocus Lawn & Squirrels

The squirrel could be trying to hide acorns rather than dig up your bulbs. We see them all the time, usually hiding peanuts in the lawn. ( even the magpies hide peanuts in the lawn!) I would think this time of year they are probably hiding rather than searching! They may go for the bulbs...

    Rats

Make sure there is no obvious food source the rats are after, then put down bait. I know it is not nice but it is the only way we have been able to get rid of them!

Run submerged waterfall pump without water, what will happen

If the set up is like the picture you posted, where is the problem? In the diagram, the inlet to the skimmer section is positioned quite low so the sump ( skimmer part of the pond) will always be full of water, even if there is a power outage. Can't the inlet be repositioned so it is much...

primer- for painting a wet room floor?

My sister had a go at DIY ( I should post this in the disater section) She decided the light coloured wet room flooring was badly stained and marked so she painted it with some sort of water proof paint. No prep or priming first! So I've got to help her out. Is it possible to paint a...

    11ft Garden Pond Bridge

There was a gardening program on tv about 2 years ago, which had a different type of water feature in each program. one was a flat bridge across a small lake/ large pond. It was a flat bridge with wooden decking planks. They spanned the bridge using 2 RSJ's, and I think ancored it each end by...

    apple tree

Could be 'bitter pit' or calcium deficiency. Can be brought on by soil that is too acid or an irregular water supply meaning that the plant cant take up the calcium it needs. You can spray with calcium nitrate every 10 days from mid summer onwards. I just read up on it as my apples have the same!
