    Wiring for a compressor

Hi all, hope you had a great Xmas. I am taking delivery of my new compressor next week and I need to plan how it will be best wired. It is going in the garage and requires a minimum of 45 amp fuse. Already in the garaage is an isolator switch with a few fuses in and I was wondering whether it...

    Low Water Pressure

Hi all. Just resurrecting this thread as only just getting round to doing this. I had previously looked at a complete module with pumps and accumulator plus tank that was designed to go underground. I think you could opt different size tanks and I was planning on 5000 litres. I know this is...

    Gas Connection

I am trying to find out whether I can get mains gas connected to my house. Rang National Grid today and they said that there is a low pressure gas main 300 metres away but that this is probably too far. To confirm this it would take a site visit at a cost of £485 but likely it would conclude the...

    Repairing sash windows

I have been doing some research and have decided to renovate my sash windows as opposed to replacing them. I had a couple of companies around but I wasn't particularly impressed by what they would do for the money and it seems to me that there will still be a shed load of work for me to do once...

    Moving electricity supply

Can't foresee that at this stage but who knows in the future? Will probably get a hot tub at some point as Mrs D would like one but not sure beyond that really. It's powering the outbuildings that gives me a but a bit of a concern as one may become a granny flat. D

    Moving electricity supply

Thanks BG. Transformer is 11,000 volts I think and is only supplying my property. Met likely just go with the 20kva if it keeps the cost down. Don't mind paying a bit more if it made sense to do so whilst I am at it but I am reasonably unlikely to need it in the foreseeable! D

    Moving electricity supply

Thoughts on the sizing question anyone? Thanks D

    Moving electricity supply

That would work as there are 2 posts in my garden, one with a transformer on and the one closest to the house (the one I want to ideally remove). It would be easy to dig across to the second post and lay a duct and it would also be easier to then take the supplies to the outbuildings underground...

    Moving electricity supply

I am filling in the application form for moving my current supply from a room which is fairly central to the house to an external viewing box on the gable (which is actually much closer to where the supply comes in). There are a number of questions I need to understand the answer to before...

    Fused Spurs

Thanks, I can see some good reasons to use the FCU especially with regard to creating a wek point to save overloading the cable. A couple of observations:- 1. You guys really know your stuff!! 2. It's even more obvious that us DIYers have an awful lot to learn and the fact that many of...

    Fused Spurs

Thanks John. Its protected still by the fuse at the CU but I presume its more convenient to have a fuse in the spur to go so the whole socket circuit isn't affected. I will be having a complete rewire done professionally in the next few months or so (providing I can afford it!!) and so...

    Fused Spurs

I have read on here lots of times about extending socket circuits by the use of a fused spur. Indeed, I have done this myself in a previous house based on similar advice. Just curious what the reason for doing so is? I can see that it may be convenient and also that it might help with...

    Outside Floodlight

It was a problem with the neutral at the isolation switch. There was a little bridge bar from incoming neutral that was missing, found it in the bottom of the box. All sorted now!! Thanks for the pointers. D

    Outside Floodlight

Sorry, voltage, not current. My tester can only test for voltage. Thanks for the advice, it's looking like a neutral problem. Regards D

    Outside Floodlight

I only have a basic tester, it is 2 prong but not a multimeter. There is current in both live and neutral at the light.....just no light!! That's why I thought that it may be a problem with low voltage. I am going to connect it to the other use fuse terminal in the isolation switch this...

    Outside Floodlight

Quite puzzled with an issue I am having with outside lights. I have an isolation switch in my garage that is connected to my (old style) consumer unit with a 30a re-wireable fuse. In the isolation switch there are 3 20a fuses that previously fed 2 outside lights and took power to a shed...

    Water leak?

Thanks Dan. All pre-existed so I am not sure where the drain entering the manhole goes back to but it does definitely have some safe water gullies connected to it. As you say, have to try switching the water main off for a while!! D

    Water leak?

From other posts some of you may know that I have had an issue with water logging at the side of my house (now sorted with a land drain) and low water pressure. The manhole at the side of the house which is for surface water run off feeds into the new land drain but bizarrely is STILL running at...
