    Planning Permission for Outbuildings.....

Aye, I'm aware that I'd need to apply for planning permission should my allowance be used or not have enough left for an extension project. The angle I'm coming from is more the "where's the harm?" angle, ie, if I had a shed up (nothing spectacular, just 6ft high, maybe 6ft long, 4-5ft wide)...

    Planning Permission for Outbuildings.....

....after Permitted Development allowance is exceeded. Hi people, If you've read other posts, you might notice that I'm thinking about some sort of Conservatory/Extension as a Permitted Development in the future. One thing that has got me thinking, is regarding sheds and outbuildings...

    Conservatory v Extension....opinions :)

....so the consensus opinion (so far) is that no matter how high the brick content (obviously not higher than allowed) and no matter how many devious tricks with thick blinds and big radiators, a conservatory will still be impractical for half the year? Shame, I was liking the idea of...

    Conservatory v Extension....opinions :)

Out of interest, what about a wooden framed, upvc clad type extension? Or do I risk making it look as though I've just erected a beach hut next to me house? :P

    Conservatory v Extension....opinions :)

Aye, an extension would be the better option generally, but I'm just debating whether my skillset stretches that far lol, I gather as long as you get the base right, a convervatory goes up a bit like a large meccano set lol

    Conservatory v Extension....opinions :)

Afternoon everyone, I'm sure that this has been asked before, but I'd be interested to hear everyones views on this topic. Basically after a month or so of solid DIY, where I've built stud walls, hung doors, built fences, hung gates, did some work on the plumbing etc, I'm feeling fairly...

    25mm Celotex v 50mm Expanded Polystyrene

Lol, I thought that too, but apparently so, insulation then screed on top. I haven't done anything yet as I'm busy with other stuff. Looking at it again though, I might be pushing it getting 50mm insulation and a screed down in the depth we have available. I have building control coming out...

1st floor stud wall supported by the floor itself?

Chipboard I believe is 20mm and the joists are spaced at approx 34-35mm centres by the looks of it. The sole plate would actually strictly rest ever so slightly on the joist (only by 5mm or so)

1st floor stud wall supported by the floor itself?

Hi everyone, quick one which I'm struggling to get an answer to, but it could always be my useless searching skills. Is it okay to have a small section of stud wall (approx 2.0m) supported purely by the chipboard floor it rests on (as it falls between the joists), or should he chipboard be...

Chipped/uneven plaster overboarding with plasterboard, etc

Hello everyone, the attached image shows where a stud wall was previously attached, the area to the right is to be our new downstairs cloakroom, the area to the left is the hallway/entrance porch. The plaster on the wall to the right isn't particularly level, because of this and...

    Condensation on Bedroom Window

Original timber single glazed (to be replaced this year with double glazed upvc hopefully) I don't think it's just at night, although it certainly is worse at night, there's a little vent about the window (small slidey thing on the frame itself), but I suppose it could be blocked or simply...

Drilling into Block and Beam floor....

Hi people, As some of you will be sick of hearing (waits for the groans) we have a Block and Beam floor at ground level in our house. Recently I have removed most of the floating chipboard crap that was laying on top of this, and have this week removed a section of stud wall (non load...

    Condensation on Bedroom Window

Lol  There is no extractor in the kitchen, we've lived in the house a decade but only bought it ourselves recently. You make an interesting point, and maybe one I should have already thought of....extraction facilities in the kitchen....I'll make a note. :D The ceiling needs to...

    Condensation on Bedroom Window

Not sure if this is the correct part of the forum to post in, but I'm sure it'll be moved if it isn't.... We've always had a problem with condensation on a bedroom window, no matter how dry the other windows in the house are, this window is usually wet. Recently I've been getting stuck...

    25mm Celotex v 50mm Expanded Polystyrene

hmmmm, is Expanded Polystyrene okay for laying a screed over the top of? Looking at the stuff, it just doesn't look strong enough lol, I've always assumed the Celotex/Kingspan stuff is more 'solid' (probably wrongly assumed lol). Is extruded polystyrene any better?

    25mm Celotex v 50mm Expanded Polystyrene

Darn lol. I think I can just about stretch to 50mm of insulation and 50-65mm of screed, but it's going to be mighty mighty close. How does 50mm Celotex compare to 50mm expanded polystyrene? Also is Jablite any better than standard expanded polystyrene? I was wandering through the local...

    25mm Celotex v 50mm Expanded Polystyrene

Hi people, sorry I'm having a nightmare finding facts and figures today, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Looking to replace 50mm crumbly expanded polystyrene/chipboard floating floor, with 25mm Celotex and a Screed. How does 25mm Celotex compare to the 50mm polystyrene...

    Loft Conversion Project

I love this conversion, just goes to show what a nice useable room you can make out of a relatively compact space. Your house looks very very similar to ours in places (ours is ex housing assocation mind) I wonder if the same construction company was involved. Would love to see even more...
