    Fighting Block Paving Weeds

I've now got really mature weed plants that have taken hold in the block paving over the summer. Strangely it's been laid for 10 years and never needed any maintenance until now, apart from jet wash. So, looking into weed burners, there seem to be the 2000w electric versions and the butane ones...

    Offset Water Feature?

I’m attempting a water feature using this concrete monolith, however having excavated the plot discovered a solid concrete plinth directly where I need the monolith to sit (marked by my yellow pick axe). I’ve considered breaking it or cutting it with an angle grinder, but it’s solid and at least...

    WATER FEATURE. HOW 2

I see, thanks. And did you use a shower waste outlet to collect the runoff from the tray back into the reservoir?

    WATER FEATURE. HOW 2

This looks superb, and very similar to something I'm contemplating. I have a very heavy concrete monolith, but the spot I want to place it can't be dug out because it has some kind of concrete/masonry floor. Immediately to the left however I've been able to dig a decent sized (60x60cm) hole in...

Recommendations - Windows/Doors in NW London

The Everest or Anglian business model appears to be to start with a sky high quote and a long and tiring sales pitch and then roll out progressively bigger discounts to keep the customer on board if they're losing interest. That's one approach, but I prefer an honest price up front. The quote...

    K-Rend on Pebbledash?

Yeah, I've seen that uPVC stuff, and it looks a bit naff if you ask me. What I might have done if the budget was there and I was replacing all the timber, would be to use the Tudor Board stuff which is really very authentic looking and will last a lifetime. However I'd be hesitant about mixing...

    K-Rend on Pebbledash?

A consensus! That was easy, and relatively cheaper than what I was looking at. I had the guy round who did a great job on the rendering, plaster and skim inside the house and he quoted me about £7k to k-rend outside, replace timbers, and even rebuild the front garden wall. The price was too good...

    K-Rend on Pebbledash?

We have a detached house built in 1920, solid brick walls, mock tudor timber cladding and pebbledash. Some of the rotten timbers need replacing and the pebbledash needs new paint, so I thought I'd modernise/simplify it by just doing coloured render right on top of the pebbledash, which is pretty...

Recommendations - Windows/Doors in NW London

Hi all, my dad needs three replacement windows and a couple of doors. Probably Composite but maybe even uPVC. The problem is that he will just go to Everest or Anglian and get ripped off. How do I find a decent reputable company that will fit well made products at a good price? Are there big...

    Under Sink Pipework

Thanks for that, I'll persist in my efforts a little more.

    Under Sink Pipework

I thought that was something of the original seal or something, there’s no actual leak. Anyway, I tried with water pump pliers to no avail. It does turn slightly but not enough to release the grip. Instead it twists the thread directly under the waste more than the u bend. I’m starting to deform...

    Under Sink Pipework

So, I just tried to unscrew that U-Bend and it's stuck solid. Can this just be loosened by force (or a jar opener) or is this usually fixed with some kind or solvent weld or tape? I don't want to destroy it.

    Under Sink Pipework

great! I'll try that tomorrow and let you know if I've flooded the street..!

    Under Sink Pipework

Hi all, I'm trying to install a pull-out bin under the sink, but need about 1cm of extra clearence to enable it to fit. The under-sink pipework is blocking it a tiny bit. How does this all fit together? Would I be able to just release the U-Bend and fit a shorter one instead, or shorten the...

    Cement Shelf Life

    great stuff, thanks both

    Cement Shelf Life

No, doesn't seem lumpy, they're still dry. So is it only an issue if the ambient moisture has got to them and they've started to set? That's what I was wondering, because visually they seem fine.

    Cement Shelf Life

Real rookie question this, Building 101 stuff. I bought a few bags of Mastercrete last summer (2020) to lay some limestone slabs in a section at the back of my garden. Not really load bearing or anything, mainly cosmetic. Anyway, I know cement has a fairly short shelf life, but the bags have...

dulux trade wood primer by roller?

Thank you all. I wish they would just say 'Do Not Spray' instead of "Application: brush only". I found that roller application, in some circumstances, is quick and consistent in terms of finish and coverage. But of course brushing is good too. At least I'm a bit more informed now. Cheers

dulux trade wood primer by roller?

yes agreed, I ended up using the brush almost exclusively since there is so much narrow beading and cutting in. However I couldn't see any actual problem with roller application in principle, so was wondering why the tin says "Application: brush only"?

dulux trade wood primer by roller?

4" roller. It's pretty good for the outer part or the frame and sills, but obviously not for the the rest. I fill in with a brush. I find it pretty smooth, and if you go over it again while it's drying gets good coverage. I'm not getting any bubbles either. I don't really understand the drawback...
