replacing old compression fittings with combi install

The CORGI plumber who is going to comission my new boiler said he would prefer me to do the water pipe work as the existing pipework is all done with compression fittings and he wants nothing to do with it. He suggested replacing it all with solder joints or plastic. The house is 1965 and I...

    Insulating behind UPVC cladding boards

The outside of my 1960's house has white UPVC cladding on a wood frame over a 150mm low density block wall. Can I insulate this, or am I wasting my time. Do cavity wall insulation companies fill the space behind the cladding?

Using diesel oil in petrol engines, advice please

The additives in the oil are different. the basic oils are similar, and you wont destroy your engine by using the wrong oil. Oil gradually thins or becomes diluted over time, with contaminats from the fuel. Also an engine produces acids from the combustion process and impurities in the fuel...

    Audi A4 1.9TDi-Loss Of Power

partially blocked intake manifold, or ERG valve. Common for these cars to get fouled with an oil and soot from exhaust gas mix when they have high mileage. Don't be tempted to use one of these engine cleanout sprays that you spray into the air intake. You run the risk of putting a large quantity...

    Peugeot 206 Diesel noise

My friends 206 diesel did exactly this. We traced it to the wiring to number 1 injector. Just where the wires plug onto the fuel injector, there was a break in the wire and it was running on 3 cylinders sometimes. With the engine running, try pulling on/ moving the wires that go to each...

    MGF steaming

Sounds like the dreaded HGF (Head Gasket failure). The worst thing you can do is drive it, and if you do, keep one eye on the temperature guage and stop as soon as it starts to rise. You can quickly turn a reasonably straitforward repair into a very expensive one. See mg-rover.org forum for...

    Audi A4 1.9TDi-Loss Of Power

Sounds like either a leaking intercooler pipe or possibly a failed turbo. how many miles has it done? Firstly, check all the large rubber pipes around the engine for splits/ loose fittings etc. You may also see some oil leaking out where the pipe is leaking.

    VW Polo Headlamp Bulbs.

I am not sure on your exact model, but in general it is usually easier to remove the fuel filter. Headlights are often a pig to take out as it often involves removing the front bumper and other trim pieces to get at all the screw.

Thankyou for the replies. No, we are not dwarfs, I did mean 2.35m ceiling. I think I will board it and install new lighting, then call a plasterer in.

    repairing a ceiling

My lounge ceiling has many coats of different finishes and is also badly cracked. There is quite a big span of ceiling and the floor in the bedroom above is a bit flexable, which has caused the cracking over time. The cracks follow the edges of the plasterboards that were originally put up...

Routing of main equipotential bonding wires

What are the rules for routing the earth conductor from where the water pipe enters the house to the CU. Does it have to be in conduit, in a safe zone, or can I just cable tie the earth wire along my existing water pipe as it runs right past the CU anyway. Thanks.

    power steering pump

I have sprayed WD on the alternater wheel etc, but to no avail. The noise only appears when i accelerate, not when car is just ticking over. icon_sad.gif Bad thing to do. It will make it worse. Change PAS drive belt, clean off WD40 and check that the tensioner is set correctly.
