New tv - Sky News signal break up when on RGB setting

Thanks. I've had a slightly iffy reception on a couple of channels for a while but Sky News was always OK. Maybe the ancient Sky Box worked better with the equally ancient CRT!

New tv - Sky News signal break up when on RGB setting

Am on Freesat from Sky with an old Panasonic box and a new Samsung TV connected via scart. Everything was great on set up - apart from pixelation and break up on Sky news. Which was odd as the one channel I could get even in bad weather was Sky! However when tinkering with the Sky remote...

Ceiling crack in difficult to reach spot above stairwell.

Hello I'm sprucing up the house prior to it going on the market. There is a thin 2 foot long crack on the ceiling just above the stairwell - close to where the ceiling meets the wall. It graduates from hairline to about 16th of an inch in old money and has been there since the roofers were...

    Undateables?

I can't make up my mind about this. The last programme I watched featured a woman with dwarfism (sorry don't know the politically correct name) off on a date with a normal height guy. On the one hand, quite heartwarming, on the other hand I wondered how she could let herself be rolled on as a...

    Temperamental fridge (Candy) light

I have a built in Candy fridge. Sometimes the light is off when I open the door. But a tap on the work surface above, or on the light fitting itself, or on the door switch - will bring it back on! The fridge itself seems to be working OK. Is this a sign of the bulb going or something more...

    Replacing lightswitches.

Wow - I didn't mean to start WW3! Looking at the discussion on here I think an electrician might be the best bet :(

    Preparing a floor for carpet.

The bedroom floor will be carpeted once the decorating is finished. A proper job, with decent underlay. The floorboards are a mess - paint splodges and dirt from diy etc. Aside from getting rid of any obvious lumps of plaster/paint and giving the floor a good vac, would you recommend giving it a...

Help! ive just painted walls with gloss and not matt

I did the same thing with silk and did an entire wall before I realised it was drying to a nice sheen - which is not what I wanted. I just abraded it with a sander and it covered ok with matt. Not sure that would work with gloss though.

    Replacing lightswitches.

Just what I was wondering and didn't like to ask. This cottage was previously owned by Messrs Dodge it and Bodge it. Ie even I knew when I moved in that having a double electric socket touching base with the kitchen sink directly behind the taps was not a good idea. Who knows what is behind...

    Replacing lightswitches.

I want to replace my manky old plastic light switches with brass ones. I know the topic is covered here but I'm not sure of my capabilities. How easy is it for a novice? Not even sure of getting the right ones. If I don't do it myself, could I trust it to a handyman 'all rounder' or would it...

Painting bare wood - to prime or not?

The directions on the undercoat I had previously, said it could be used as a primer on bare wood as well as standard undercoat. But on the undercoat tins I have now, it says to use primer first. The wood in question is some new skirting board in a bedroom. Could I get away with applying...

At least it's not pineapple - hate the stuff

Sticking Xmas lights around windows/UPVC frames

Can anyone recommend a way of doing this? Are there any products out there that work? I seem to spend my life replacing bits of sellotape or even duct tape that seem to give up after a while :(

    RIP Nelson Mandela

RIP indeed but getting to 95 and having a presumably peaceful death surrounded by his family was a good way to go. He did renounce violence when he was freed - which was remarkable. Unfortunately the S Africa he left behind is still riddled with poverty, racism and crime. Plus I don't think we...

    Sugar soap before painting walls??

Well all the advice I have seen on the net says to dust from the top downwards but with damp cleaning to work upwards - otherwise any cleaning solution running down a dirty wall could cause a build up of streaks that are difficult to remove.

    Sugar soap before painting walls??

I'm painting a spare bedroom that hasn't been done since before I moved in years ago. The walls are really filthy - not helped by the dust and dirt from recent repair work. Usually I just vac and wipe with a cloth but I think this calls for a bit more prep. Would a wipe down with a damp sponge...

    Almond smell?

Finally I'm decorating the spare room - which has previously been used as a diy store. It hasn't been used as a bedroom since I moved in years ago and there is no furniture in it. But I'm getting a sweetish vaguely almond smell. Though it doesn't seem as strong since I started...

    Repairing flooboards

I'm decorating a bedroom and (where previous occupants did some clumsy diy) there is a foot long split in one floorboard - with a hole about 2 x 1 inch (in old money) at the end. Is there a way to repair the damaged area without removing any of it or could I get away with replacing that part...
