The bedroom floor will be carpeted once the decorating is finished. A proper job, with decent underlay. The floorboards are a mess - paint splodges and dirt from diy etc. Aside from getting rid of any obvious lumps of plaster/paint and giving the floor a good vac, would you recommend giving it a damp clean? I've just brought up a load of dirt with vinegar and bicarb but it will take an age to do the whole floor. Please tell me it would be overkill to do it!

Na! Open a can of beer instead. No point after a few years when you take up the carpet it will be dusty from all the tiny bits that filter through a carpet over the years.

Good vac, check for lumps, protuding nails and loose boards, no squeaks wanted after the carpet is laid!

Not really any requirement to do that, if you want, you could ask the fitter to paperfelt the flor prior to fitting the gripper and underlay, tis can help keep dust at bay etc.

If your speccing quality underlay, make sure it's a natural felt or combofelt such as Axminster Axfet65.
