    Stud wall timber size

I'm going to put up a stud wall approx 3100 long to divide a hallway and sitting room. The sitting room is very narrow and the walls wont be taking any loads, so I'm tempted to use 3 by 2 instead of 4 by 2. Does this sound wise and will it be adequately strong or am I better off sacrificing...

    Skirting and architrave styles

Just doing a total refurb so changing all skirting and architrave. I've used Ogee before - cheap, easily available and looks okay. Looking at 6" skirting and 3" architrave What do you guys use for modern look refurbs? I'm considering 4" chamfered, but torn as it might look modern and sleek...

Using cold forming bends with plastic barrier pipe

I need to run some pipe in my bathroom and upto the sink and shower. I'm attracted to these bends as I will have less push fit joints under the soon to be tiled floor. Has anyone used these? Are they a good substitute for 90 degree connectors when bringing up pipework to sinks, showers etc?

    Choosing a solid internal door

I've had £15 B&Q moulded doors and am replacing them with something more solid looking and with a real grain. I'm looking at these two and apart from the priming is there a reason why the latter may be a better door...

White stuff (salts) coming out of brick joints.

Is it an external ground floor wall? I've seen it before where there was a damp problem and the damp brought the salts out. We ended up curing the damp problem with an injected DPC and waterproof render for the first metre up and this stopped the salts.

Sizing of speedfit piupes for GCH and water

I've installed my own central heating system. Pretty straight forward if you've a good level of DIY skill and I know a few people who've done it DIY. I did it all in 15mm plastic once I got away from the boiler and it works brilliantly. I've even heard of some people doing it in 8mm pipe so...

9.5 or 12.5mm plasterboard for ceilings?

I've always used 9 for ceilings and 12 for walls. Maybe the weight would cause problems on the rafters as it's also holding up the old lathe and plaster?

Stud wall screw and stud sizes

4 by 2 and 75mm x 4 makes sense. I bought 100mm by 4.75 originally but they're far too bulky. Got some good 100mm frame fixing screws. Thanks for all your help guys!

    HEP20 vs Speedfit

Thanks folks. Seems odd that Toolstation, B&Q, Screwfix etc only stock JG when HEP seems more popular with you guys

Stud wall screw and stud sizes

I'm building a non structural stud wall. I've read a few guides which specify different nails (3.75*75 and 4.5*100 - I don't have a brad) and also 3 by 2 or 4 by 2 studs. What would you folks use?

Chasing out depth for cables for rewire

I've just got online again after the weekend - but thank you ever so much for your post. It's both very informative giving me some ideas for when I tart to chase out and I'd certainly agree with you about it being useful to have some knowledge of the wok (any tradesman does to be able to...

Chasing out depth for cables for rewire

I've chased into plaster before with a hammer and chisel - not a neat job, but the whole place is being replastered anyway afterwards. I found chasing away the plaster fairly quick so although I've looked at the SDS chisel bits I've not been tempted yet. Are they really that much quicker or is...

    HEP20 vs Speedfit

Ah - thanks. I was planning to pay he gas guy to fit the boiler and connect up to the plastic leads I left below. I've done plenty of core drilling in my time and could happily fit up and plumb a combi so he just has to connect the gas and commission. Would most Gassafe guys be happy with the...

    HEP20 vs Speedfit

Thanks a lot gentlemen. I'm going to go with Speedfit and very excited about running my own GCH system (plus the money I'll save) :-)

Chasing out depth for cables for rewire

Thanks. It's a complete rewire so will be whatever protection the 17th edition specifies. Sounds like just going back the brick should be sufficient. What's the typical chase width? Is 4cm going to suffice?

Chasing out depth for cables for rewire

I'm going to get my house rewired but want to save some money on the electrician so will chase out the boxes and cable runs myself. For a full rewire (so Part P notifiable) how deep and wide do I need to chase for the cable into a brick wall? Can I just remove the plaster and go back to the...

    HEP20 vs Speedfit

I had a plumber fit HEP20 in my last property and as very happy with it - never leaked and got no creaking pipes that I used to have with copper. I'm going to fit my current place with plastic pipe. Speedfit barrier pipe and fittings seem much more common than HEP20. Is it going to be a...

Trade accounts - Selco, TP, Jewsons etc

£3.75 for that board is a bargain. I've got a B&Q tradecard and it comes in at £4.56 in bulk there which I thought was pretty good. Cheers guys - there's a TP very close by so I'll pop over there

    Installing concrete lintel for doorway

It's an internal load bearing wall made of old 190s blockwork and our SE has specced a 65/100/1200 lintel with 150mm bearing onto blockwork either side. I've only installed lintels into non load bearing walls before. Can I just place the lintel onto the bearings with mortar between or do I...
