Thanks for your reply... the ballvalve isnt faulty and its not "evapotranspiration" its definitely a syphoning problem when the pumps turn off The balvalve is always going to be open as its acting as a mechanical safety device and the pumps turn on and off using a float switch just below...

Does the above sound like a plan?...any ideas on the sorts of bolts, nuts, washers etc I will need to go through the top of the tank and through the bilge pump handles?...I need to do it in a way where the pumps can be taken out without to much aggro should they need cleaning etc

good idea :) Trouble is it would need to be a solid fixed bracket the exact length of the gap between the roof of the tank and the handle of the pump in order to keep it fixed into place...this will also make it hard to get the pumps out for service Just had a further think about this...

Sorted it.... 25mm open rubber grommits..the type electricians use..3.5p each + vat then push the male threads of the 25mm compression gland through the hole..tested it yesterday and staying bone dry :)

the 25mm compression gland is perfect for a 1/2 internal diameter pipe, seals perfectly and cheaply (35p per gland) problem is getting the soft rubber washers to seal the gland nicely where it enters the bucket/s. I could use sealant like LSX but I am planning on selling these systems as kits so...

The main 100L reservoir (25 gallon water tank) is considerably lower than the 2 x water butts of which are 330L...still having problems picturing this...can I be cheeky and ask someone do me a rough sketch please
