Vectra Gearbox or Alternator Whine ?

The quotes I've had do vary a lot by area even through the same website... I got £22 offer for an area much further away and £192 from not far away from me, with various differing rates in between. The only condition of the offer seems to be that's it's a complete car including all wheels and...

Vectra Gearbox or Alternator Whine ?

I've looked online and there seem to be several companies that will give me £150 for it including coming to pick it up, and if I drive it to them it seems I could get up to about £190

Vectra Gearbox or Alternator Whine ?

Thanks for the replies. I didn't get round to trying any of the suggestions but the noise has now got an additional grating in every gear so pretty sure it is the gearbox (possibly bearings). I was due to replace the car soon anyway so I've decided it will just go for scrap for a few quid...

Vectra Gearbox or Alternator Whine ?

Hi.... A few days ago I noticed that my 2006 Vectra C had developed a high pitched whine (sounds a bit like a car reversing fast or a milk float). My first thoughts were that it was the gearbox but following some online searches the alternator kept cropping up as a possible culprit. Strangely...

Achieving "oak effect" using varnish or oil ?

Hi... Not really sure if this belongs in the painting/decorating forum or the woodworking forum... I am wanting to create a timber mantle piece over my fire surround and want the finished effect to be what I would call "oak effect" similar to the link below (perhaps slightly shinier)...

    Non-serviceable taps?

I had removed the taps because they weren't fitted correctly (by me) in the first place and the tap body kept twisting (slipping) on the basin. I think it was because of this resulting in them not being turned off tightly enough therefore dripping. That did occur to me but the b&q statement...

    Non-serviceable taps?

I did try that but it didn't seem to want to come off. Maybe I didn't pull hard enough but if that is the case then the b&q bathroom guy was fibbing when he told me they are not meant to have the washer replaced. Anyway, it's not a problem because I refitted the taps and the dripping seems to...

    Non-serviceable taps?

Not a big problem at all but I just wondered if taps were now generally sold without the option of replacing a washer when needed. The reason I bought compression taps in the first place was because I've had problems replacing the cartridge in taps before because it seems more difficult to get...

    Non-serviceable taps?

Thanks... My taps are compression taps (they aren't the cartridge type) but you can't access the washer without trashing the tap. I asked in b&q and the bathroom department assistant said they have a ten year guarantee and are not designed to have the washer replaced.

    Non-serviceable taps?

Hi... Just a straight forward question. I bought some basin taps from b&q a couple of years ago and today decided to replace the washer because it was starting to drip occasionally. But to my surprise, I couldn't figure out how to get to the washer and discovered that b&q taps are designed to...

Kitchen tap no hot water.... Isolation valve the culprit?

Thanks guys.... I've had the tap stem off already, but didn't really tell me anything. The tap is quite old and green/corroded anyway so think I'll replace it and the isolation valve too as that's leaking quite a bit now too. Cheers

Kitchen tap no hot water.... Isolation valve the culprit?

Hi.... I've got a problem with my kitchen tap and think it's the isolation valve causing the problem but just thought I'd ask for a professional opinion before draining and replacing. When I turn the hot tap on I get a trickle of water. If I turn the cold water tap on it runs fine. Old style...

Belt & braces prep for skimming over artex

Not 100% sure now that you ask but I guess so as it doesn't look dirty but is probably 28 years old.

Belt & braces prep for skimming over artex

I love your terminology, but surely the pva would seal the artex to prevent it from drawing the moisture out of the skim too quickly ? And I thought thistle bond-it was for "smooth/low suction backgrounds".....what is what I believed I would have after I had pva'd the artex.

Belt & braces prep for skimming over artex

Hi, I'm considering skimming over my artex ceiling and I'm familiar with most of the potential issues in doing so, but as I am not a plasterer I wanted to check something specific.... I know that some people say pva then skim, and some say thistle bond-it then skim but would there be any issue...

    Oven element wrong connector...?

Thanks for quick response.. Unfortunately the element connector broke off in the process of reconnecting to the spade so will have to get another anyway. Cheers

    Oven element wrong connector...?

Hi... I have just set about replacing the element in my oven Indesit is60c1(x) and ordered a new element online. When got the new element I notice the original has different spade connectors to the new. The original has 3 x single spade connectors but the new has 2 x double spade and 1 x...

Filling / pointing to stone mullion

Hi.... I need to fill a vertical straight joint between some existing stonework and a stone pillar / mullion. The gaps are approximately 3mm at one side and 10mm at the other. Ordinarily I'm aware that lime mortar should be used for stonework but as this is a very localised filling exercise...
