    Replacing kitchen under cupboard lighting

Our kitchen under cupboard lighting has always never really worked that well (halogen bulbs regularly failing, or at least come loose and not working). I read somewhere this was common due to moisture in the kitchen, and the constant banging of the cupboard doors above making the bulbs come...

    Conifer renovation (and identification)

I have a conifer at the front of my house that I'd like to reduce in size (I'm worried it's going to get massive) and tidy up around the base somewhat (as it's uneven and looks a mess!). I'd ideally like to cut the top off (approx the midpoint between the two windows), and then improve the...

    Bread maker trips RCD

We were recently given a Goodmans bread maker that has not been used for approx 9 years (stored in a garage for all that time). Tonight, when testing it for the first time, it tripped the house electrics at around 2 hours 45 mins into the 3 hours 45 mins cycle. Given the warmth too, I...

Ivy removal from house wall (help, it's out of control!))

I've realised the ivy we have climbing up the side of our hose is getting out of control (it's up to the eaves, and about to start making its way across a window). I'm looking for advice (help!). Having googled, I'm reading conflicting reports on the web. Some say to pull it from the top...

Refitting door after new carpet fitted

We've recently ripped out the laminate in a room, and had a thick pile carpet fitted with a 10mm underlay. Quite unsurprisingly, the (internal) door couldn't be put back on afterwards, due to the height of the new floor covering. When I rest the door on the new carpet, and line up the...

Tightening loose hinge causes door to stick

Unfortunately the skirting is only approx 150 mm long anyway, and at a slight angle towards where the door should open (so the door hits the corner). For the 99p it'll cost for a door stop, I may try it anyway! Two people have mentioned using the correct sized hinges. How would I know...

Tightening loose hinge causes door to stick

Thanks for that. It had crossed my mind, though I assumed the door stop have the same effect as the door hitting the skirting (i.e. still a jolt, acting as a pivot and eventually levering the hinges out)

    Exterior door seal loose

Sorry I should have said, it's a wooden door. I'll try to get a pic up later.

    Exterior door seal loose

Another post, about another exterior door! The weather/draught strip for our front door has deteriorated/come loose. There appears to be a 1-2mm notch in the door that it was previously in, though trying to 'shove' it back in with a flathead screwdriver doesn't seem to work. Does it...

Tightening loose hinge causes door to stick

Hello all, I'm just working through my DIY 'to do' list, and came to look at the loose (external) door hinge I have. The door is wooden, and has three hinges. The bottom one seems to be loose where attached to the frame. When the door is opened too wide, it hits some skirting behind...

Sealing external flap vent to wall

Finally got the replacement through, and there are holes in the corners. Do people recommend screwing these (vents) to the wall before sealing them to it?

    Rotted Fence Posts

Thanks for the replies :) Whilst going against the (DIY) nature of these forums, if I chicken out to get the professionals in, is this a job for a builder or a fencer?

    Rotted Fence Posts

We have 4" fence posts going around our garden, that are set in concrete. In between the fence is made up of vertical strips of wood, the height of the fence with gaps in between. I've noticed 2 or 3 fence posts rotted at the base (where they leave the concrete). One has completely...

Sealing external flap vent to wall

I have unibond (external) window and door already. Is that what you'd class as a decent mastic?

Sealing external flap vent to wall

I have a flap vent on the outside of our house (the outlet for an extractor fan over our hob) that has come loose. It looks like it was previously attached/sealed round the edges with a thick sealant. Will (external) window and door frame sealant do to re-attach/seal it to the...

Can anyone identifiy this tap / cartridge

We've got a dripping tap, that's getting worse! I've been to a local plumbers merchants, who provided replacement Bristan cartridges, which fit in the mixer perfectly, though the handle/knob then didn't fit back on, so I had to return them! Can anyone please identify the tap or cartridge...

Re-pointing ridge tiles in below zero temps before the snow

Are there any forum regulars who are roofers in the Wigan area? It's so difficult to get a decent recommendation.

    Dry ridge retro fit

Another post with regards to roofing! We have a 15 year old house, and the mortar (where the gable-end wall meets the roof), is starting to fall out in places, exposing the batons. We've had a quote for dry verge to be fitted, and I was surprised the roofer suggested that he would simply...

Re-pointing ridge tiles in below zero temps before the snow

We recently had a leak, and had a roofer round who told us it was the mortar/pointing in the ridge tiles that needed re-pointing. The thing is, he did it yesterday morning (when the temp was below zero), finishing around 4 hours before it started snowing heavily (for about 8 hours)...

    Repainting damaged front door

I need to repaint our front door (currently white, want to repaint white). There is some damage on the frame (approx 60mm * 25 mm) where the paint has completely come away, and the wood beneath is exposed and starting to rot/flake off :( I'm trying to make a plan to resolve this before...
