Insulated plasterboard or insulation sheet and plasterboard

so I'm about to order up my finish layers and the thermal calculator shows to use insulated plasterboard. but knowing how annoying insulation and plasterboard is to cut. having them glued together just sounds like a right nightmare. Are the values the same for buying them separately (25mm...

    Painting new External softwoods

Thanks for the link. the long lasting appeal is certainly.. erm.. appealing. I don't fancy stumping up for scaffolding every 10years or so.

    Painting new External softwoods

We do have a lot more timber to go into the project so I might have a look into it. drying time isn't (shouldn't) be a problem, its taking me years as is so whats a few more days :) gap filling is interesting, the modern paints are very forgiving. maybe I'll practice my filler work in the...

    Painting new External softwoods

Ah ok, you're going to go straight off piste and go all heritage on me. Fair point. I will have a think about it for the upcoming wood works. but as I've already covered the gutter boards in undercoat/primer I think I'll look to a modern covering. And why does everything heritage have to come...

    Secondary glazing a window

Hi, I have a couple of windows in the house which are fixed not openable and are fitted with single pane glass. I have used aluminium secondary glazing on most of the others normal windows so far. But for these could I just build an internal window to act as a secondary window. Say If just...

hi, I'm looking for a good paint to put on new external wood details things like Gutter boards, windows, and shiplap detail. I spoke to Dulux centre the other day and was recommended their "Quick Dry Opaque" in White. I thought I'd just post here first to see if anyone has used this or has...

Difficulty achieving required uvalues, can I negotiate lower?

the external walls fall on other property lines. I would have to seek permissions for the extra 110mm... which might be harder than talking to building control. but thanks for the heads up on the approved docs. I don't suppose you have any more clarity?

Difficulty achieving required uvalues, can I negotiate lower?

we have permission for external material changes. The building was falling down so we wanted to shore it up. ultimately would like to convert to a dwelling. but not having a massive budget we are doing up as we go. Its a studio space for now, but would like to convert to a flat in the future...

Difficulty achieving required uvalues, can I negotiate lower?

is there any allowance for achieving worse that expected (required) u values. for example I'm developing a rather small building, and adding 100mm or more to each side of a solid brick walls will have a great impact on the final usable space in. Same for ceiling height, they are all very low...

    Insulating using PIR between joists/rafters

Ah yes that calculator is a lot better than kingspan, it allows a lot of freedom of choices. Unfortunately it appears the only way to hit the U value target (0.18) between rafters is with 200mm PIR (gives 0.17). So looks like I'll have to be doing the plasterboard between and under.

    Insulating using PIR between joists/rafters

Thanks for your reply. do you know if there is a calculator I can use to check the Uvalue based on 100 or 120mm PIR in between? Yes I think you're right about separate kingspan and plasterboard being cheaper, and also a damn sight easier to cut and prepare! What would be a good method to fix...

    Insulating using PIR between joists/rafters

hi, I am trying to rebuild a building and I'm getting to the insulation stage. I notice the kingspan u value calculator offers lots of solutions, but all of them come with insulated plasterboard as a final covering. Is it not possible to simply insulate between rafters/joists and finish with...

Spray foam insulation vs Kingspan types

Thanks for all your info, I really hate the idea of Spray foam (so so messy and final), so without a huge positive I'm staying well clear.

Spray foam insulation vs Kingspan types

So I was being sarky when I said it was a pleasure, its a job I really dislike, just getting a straight cut is a very hard task! So this is for a new roof, i.e. in between rafters, and soon I'll be doing the solid brick walls. and sorry for the terrible spelling of rigid, it did strike me as...

Spray foam insulation vs Kingspan types

Hi all, I'm renovating a building at the moment and getting close to the dreaded insulation job. I've done ridged kingspan type before and its a real pleasure, all that measuring, cutting, fitting and then filling the gaps! So I'm wondering what the stance is on spray foam? I don't really see...

    Hidden cistern placement

Hi, My planned toilet location has had to be shifted (from pointing West to pointing North), this means my perfect location for a hidden cistern is now not directly behind the bog. I'm wondering can I add some waste pipe lengths and elbows to get my hidden position cistern to empty into the...

    Price of new water connection

Hi all, Just thought I'd check out what people normally pay for a new water connection. I want two new connections to my property and my local water company wants £1700 for this, which includes them connecting with a 1 meter trench. I.e they dig up 1 meter to get to my trench. I had a quote...

    Multiple planning permissions

That's very helpful, thanks. I will look into the permitted development rules as I am under the impression (from previous research) we'd fall into that.
