    More decking woes...

I'd love to but my computer skills aren't quite up to it! The basic question is - do I need secondary bearers for joists 1.8 meters long? Joists are at about 42cm centres. Sorry I couldn't do the picture!

    More decking woes...

This is the problem with reading so many different sets of instructions on how to build a deck! I'm attempting to construct a deck about 23cm off the ground (I know it's not a lot but the ground underneath is very far from being level enough for a ground level deck). It's about 5.3 meters...

    Decking posts.

Cheers for that Pitbull. The things I've been reading suggest filling the hold with concrete and then fixing metal post sockets on top of that with expansion bolts and posts in there. You'd recommend putting the posts directly in the ground with the cement would you?

    Decking posts.

Hi all. I'm planning to deck over an existing patio (although I use the phrase in the loosest possible sense as it's only a few slabs on mud). As the patio doesn't seem to be stable enough - from what I've read - to lay onto I was going to dig holes and fill them with concrete and put the...

Corgi registered gas man or roofer?

I am going to be having a real flame gas fire installed in a few months time. I need a cage or cowl to be put on the chimney to stop the birds falling down it or dropping things down it. I've had a number of roofers quote me for the cage/cowl but one of them has just told me that it needs to be...

    Roofer or gas fitter?

I am going to be having a real flame gas fire installed in a few months time. I need a cage or cowl to be put on the chimney to stop the birds falling down it or dropping things down it. I've had a number of roofers quote me for the cage/cowl but one of them has just told me that it needs to...

    Lightswitch problem.

I changed a lightswitch and, when screwing the new one on, the screw went funny (technical eh?) and has now burred the little hole that it screws into. Consequently I can't get another screw into it so the switch is only attached at one side. Does this mean that I'll now have to hack the wall...

    Cage or Cowl?

I posted this in the roofing forum but someone suggested that some of you guys here might have some advice too. I'm going to have a real flame gas fire installed and have had the chimney swept in preparation but I need to stop those pesky birds from dropping stuff down the chimney and even...

    Gas in radiator???

When you get your powerflush done, make absolutely sure that you shop around thoroughly before hand. I had quotes for mine for anywhere between £200 and £650! I know shopping around is an obvious thing but with variation in price like that it's worth getting more quotes than usual I think.

    Cowl or cage?

I'm going to have a real flame gas fire installed and have had the chimney swept in preparation but I need to stop those pesky birds from dropping stuff down the chimney and even falling down it themselves! I've been told by one roofer that I need a particular type of cowl and by another that a...

Any ideas why dimmer stopped dimming?

In my kitchen I've got two ceiling light fittings each containing four halogen bulbs. It's been there since before I moved in a year ago. About six-eight months ago I fitted a dimmer switch which worked fine until the other day. I turned it on and got a big pop, a flash and one of the bulbs...

    A number of problems!

Hi all, Moved house earlier on this year and all the rads needed bleeding, which I did. Then they started getting hot at the top but cold at the bottom. Also there was a banging noise coming from the pipes (sounded like the ones running through the ceiling/upstairs floor). I was told that...
