New Consumer Unit - not sure on configuration

Hi, Bought a new CU, not sure what configuration to go for. It's a 100A Split load unit with 80A RCD, replacing a 6-gang fusebox. What sort of things should be covered by the RCD? I'd like to, for instance, exclude the lighting circuits - but the downstairs circuit feeds a light in the...

    Hemp or PTFE?

doitall - Loctite 55 (according to Loctite's own website) is used for sealing threads etc. It seems like you'd have to use an awful long piece of it to pack a gland! Or am I missing something (probably!)

    Repacking a gland

I tried using wool in my outside tap, but it got pushed up past the spindle. Either I put too much in, or wool's not a good idea! Had a plumber out the other day for a gate valve in my airing cupboard. All he did was repack the gland (apparently), for which he charged £15. I don't want to...

    Repacking a gland

My original post got a bit hijacked so here goes: What's the best thing to use for packing/repacking a gland (on, say, a gate valve)? Ta

    Hemp or PTFE?

Hi, Got an outside tap that leaks up through the spindle when tap is opened. It's full of hemp (I guess) and gunge. Is it possible to still get hemp, or is PTFE used these days? Similar problem to a gatevalve in my airing cupboard, had to get a plumber on that for a number of reasons but...

    Hairline scratches on porcelain sink

Know where I can get one? If I enter "China Rubber" into Google I get dozens of results regarding China's rubber industry! :?

    Hairline scratches on porcelain sink

Running a finger nail across them, they definitely feel like scratches rather than raised marks. Unfortunately it was end of line stock, otherwise I'd just replace the whole thing!

    Hairline scratches on porcelain sink

Hi, I've just replaced the sink in my downstairs toilet. Having installed it, I've noticed there are 4 or 5 small scratches in the finish. They kind of look like someone's drawn on it with a very fine pencil. I've tried a damp cloth, and also a cloth with white spirit on it, and they are...

Joining chrome waste pipe to PVC

Sorry -- too many posts arriving at once! I meant - what overlap for the heat gun solution? I did consider using a Flexseal solution, but was concerned about its robustness if it got knocked.

Joining chrome waste pipe to PVC

Chrisey Thinking about this whilst on holiday last week (British Summer weather gives plenty of opportunity to just sit and think!), it occurred to me that if I use a core cutter, there's nowhere for the arbor bit to locate so the core bit will just skip around all over the place. How did you...

Joining chrome waste pipe to PVC

Yep, I was aware of the potential for obstruction, but with the traffic the downstairs loo receives I wasn't particularly worried! Nobody's washing their hair in the sink or anything! Digging the floor up is a no-no. I'd already decided I didn't want to do that, but I've now laid the majority...

Joining chrome waste pipe to PVC

Hi, I have a PVC waste pipe set into the concrete in my downstairs toilet. I'm putting a new suite in, with chrome bottle trap and waste pipe. I need a way to connect the chrome pipe to the PVC pipe at floor level. I'm laying tiles so have perhaps 3/4" to play with before the joint comes...

    35mm waste pipe - 90deg elbow?

Yes - and I suppose I'll have to cut, sand and treat a block of wood to hide the join, which will have to be a white plastic compression joint at floor level.

    35mm waste pipe - 90deg elbow?

Thanks for the reply. It's a chrome bottle trap which I didn't really want to connect to the plastic waste pipe anyway. A bit more scouting around has resulted in this. It's a bit expensive but think (hope) it will be worth it. All I have to do now is figure out how to connect it at floor...
