    My First House...

The radiator infront of the chimney, did you put an airbrick in behind it? If you block the chimney at the top you'll also need an airbrick higher up too. If you don't put airbricks in, chances are your chimney will get damp.

    Corgi Work Scope

It seems you need to be very careful you don't get a complete numpter on the end of the phone when you call up! After a few circles all is clear ... National grid can't fit the semi-concealed meter because I don't have one already and they don't supply them. My gas supplier is responsible...

    Corgi Work Scope

I wish it was only £60, the actual move is costing nearer £675 :( The £60 is an additional charge for them to connect the meter back up, which they say they can't do in this case. Looks like I'll have to phone them again to find out - why they can connect up other meter types, but not a...

    Corgi Work Scope

Is a CORGI plumber allowed to connect a gas service pipe up to a new meter? The one I've spoken to so far indicated he could do everything after the meter, but not before. The reason for the question is I'm having national grid move my gas service with my original intention to pay them the...

    Lockshield with Drain

Hardly a new invention, but lockshields with built in drain valves are new to me. Looking at the pictures of them, I don't see how they can be used to drain down a system as you end up with copper pipe below the included drain valve. Am I missing something?

    Wall Chasing

I found the bit you mentioned at screwfix - http://www.screwfix.com/prods/16724/Drill-Bits/Masonry-Chisels/SDS-Plus-Chisels/Armeg-SDS-Plus-Channelling-Chisel-30mm Do these chisels always come with a bend? I have an SDS bit set that has something similar but a semi circular head and...

Urgent please! Advice needed for tomorrow

Does that matter? Shouldn't a door surround be padding out to make it square regardless of the wall it's attaching to?

Urgent please! Advice needed for tomorrow

That wouldn't be Pike E & Son would it  I'd refuse to pay for the work until the lintel was mortared in and the door frame was square (or at least squarer!). Trying to hang a door will be a real pain otherwise.

    Wall Chasing

I've got to chase around 15 new runs for cable around the house. The work will be done room by room over a month or more, so hiring isn't really an option. The wall chasers I've seen to buy appear to be nothing more than two angle grinder discs with the ability to vary cut depth and cut...

    Vaillant Boiler Choice

Yes, it measures inside and out. http://www.vaillant.co.uk/stepone2/data/downloads/1e/43/00/vrc_430_operating_instructions.pdf - page 17 You pick a heat curve and using the outside temperature it calculates the most efficient water temperature to heat the house to the desired internal...

    Vaillant Boiler Choice

Yes, and he's not advised as I've not asked him yet. I'm paying him to pressure test my work, route the flue, hang the boiler, connect the gas, connect the controls and commission the system. Anything I can do safely in advance I will, which includes deciding positions for controls and routing...

    Vaillant Boiler Choice

I've decided I'd like a vaillant boiler and narrowed the choice down to ecotec plus 837 or ecotec exclusive 838. Seems like there is only £60 between the two, is it worth getting the exclusive? Do the extra bits actually mean much? I started looking at the control options and liked the look...

    Split Plumbing Forum

Any chance the plumbing and central heating forum can be split into two? One for central heating, one for everything else plumbing related? It's such a busy forum I think a lot of threads go partly answered because in less than a day they are no longer on page 1.

    Heating Design

I'd still like to pursue my original plans in the future, so I'll lay copper suitable for the original zone system I had in mind. Having looked at what's on the market and current costs, I think I can live with TRVs for a while. I'd like my TRVs to last and work well, with an option to have...

    Heating Design

Thanks for the replies so far as I'm not fully decided on the system, so new/different viewpoints are good. I still favour the idea of being able to control temperatures on a room by room basis (7 zones for 7 individual spaces in the house). I also like the idea of being able to alter the...

    Heating Design

This house isn't huge, 2 floors, 4 bedrooms, upstairs bathroom, downstairs WC and open plan kitchen/diner/living space. TRVs would give most of what I need, but they still require altering each day morning and night, which would soon start to become a chore. I'm not a great fan of TRVs...

    Heating Design

As the weather starts to warm I'll be removing my existing heating system (old gas boiler, single rads) and replacing it with a combi boilder - most likely Vaillant 837. I'm trying to design a flexible and economical system and wondered if what I'm planning is achievable and worth the effort...

    Widgets on Apple mac

I'm not quite sure of the correct terminology here, but if you mean the icons from the dock bar you can click and drag them from the finder directly to the dock bar. If you mean the widgets in dashboard there is a + icon at the bottom of the dashboard screen which allows you to re-add those...

How to read an .XML file

If it is indeed a MS 2007 word document you have received you can convert it for free at http://www.docx2doc.com/ There are some MS office updates to allow earlier versions of Word to read docx files - I think you've already been given the link a few posts up.

    Core Drill

I have a series of holes to drill over the next 3 - 6 months, but not all at the same time or location. Depending on the feedback to the next price bracket up, I may still hire one though :) It seems you can get a set of diamond cutters delivered for around £75. Branded with different...
