    Rendering Guarantees

As tempting as it is to go round and hack all your render off the wall, I must urge you not to. At the moment you are the victim, once you start escalating you will become the antagonist. There are also a lot of other issues like damage to their brickwork, clearing away mess and the time it...

Inside Kitchen cupboard made warm by sun outside

As Dextrous says, you can insulate the cupboard, but I’m not sure that’ll look very good. The other option, as Dextrous has eluded to is to take care what you put in the ‘hot’ cupboard. Tins shouldn't be a problem getting warm, neither would dried food like rice and pasta. Maybe putting a...

Method for fixing skirting over hard floor....

A cm, that’s a huge gap. I recently fitted new skirting throughout the downstairs of my house over recently laid oak. There were a couple of high points where the wood isn't completely even - one of the joys of real wood. If the gap was more than a few mm I scribed the high point and cut the...

    Hearth adhesive

Thanks Gcol, I was going to go with a glazed tile, but I see what you mean about chipping. Tiles are fired, so I’m not worried about their heat resistance, but from what you’re saying there is no issue with adhesive, or grout and heat. I am tiling over the original tiles. The new oak...

    My oak floor

Good question Matty, Surface nailing seems to be a little controversial and I don’t understand why. Everyone wants to secret nail their wood. I bought some really decent oak and I didn’t want it to look like laminate, so I ran a block-plane down the edges and surface nailed. I’ve seen it...

    Hearth adhesive

In doing my floor recently I had to smash up the fireplace hearth. I now need to relay it with some new tiles. Tiles are fired when they are made, so I’d guess any type would do, but what adhesive and grout should I go for. I only have a small hearth to do (see piccie), so I only want a...

    My oak floor

I will do, thanks. I got three coats of oil on. I’d have liked a fourth, but the drying time is too long and I needed to start putting furniture back. I surface nailed and chamfered all the edges. I think it looks great, but I’m biased. It was a lot more work than I thought, but long...

    My oak floor

I nearly forgot to post some piccies of the oak floor I laid. This is before This is during. As you can see this was one of the surprises with an unsupported internal wall. This wall runs up two floors and is therefore structural. It was just built on the floorboards. This...

    Oak flooring oil finish

I used a floor oil, the name of which escapes me now. The instructions clearly state a minimum of three coats, which I’d say is right by the test piece I did. Having put two coats down to try and give me a chance of clearing up any spillage I’d say it definitely needs another coat.

    Oak flooring oil finish

Hi all, It’s done. I t took a week of very long days. I lifted the old floors, insulated, put in noggins because the joist run the wrong way, put down ply and then the oak. It looks excellent. I’ll post some piccies when I dig out the wires to connect the camera to the internet (everything...

    Oak flooring oil finish

I posted a load of questions at the beginning of the year about laying a new oak floor. Well, for reasons that no one will be interested in I had to put the job off. Now I’m doing it. I’m starting this weekend and have gone back over the helpful comments and am armed with everything I need - I...

    removing residue plaster

Yikes! That’s pretty poor. A lot depends how the maple floor has been finished. A sharp chisel will remove the lump, but I fear the wood will be stained. This may be time fora a call to your house insurance.

    Evolution 255mm rage3 bargain

Yes, I am cautious, and it’s not very like me. It’s just that I’ve bought so many rubbish tools in the past that I got excited about and inevitably felt let down by. I plan to pend £200 ish of my hard earned money and I want to be pleased with the saw and not let down by it. I’d also like to...

trade dulux weathershield paint cracking on pebbledash

First, don’t be depressed. I think the replies have answered your technical question. The paint was almost definitely applied too thick and has subsequently cracked. Your other question is whether the decorator will correct the error. I suspect not. He’s not done a very good job, but...
