PLEASE HELP!!

Disclaimer – I’m no expert, this is all advice based on personal experience. Don’t bother with it! Honestly, if it’s an out-house like most others then you’re wasting time and money. If you want to use the space then knock down the building and build it properly. The room will almost...

    Sliding mitre saw

Thanks Symptom, I could take a day out and go the the Administer store, but I never will. I’m a bloke and as such I understand that I can not resist buying power tools, regardless of whether I need them or not. I’d come out with wet pants and an empty wallet. Is the tool of choice the...

    Sliding mitre saw

I know we’ve been here before, but it was an old post and the tool trade moves fast. I want a sliding mitre saw and I’m after some recommendations from the good and the wise on this site. I know what I want, but I don’t really know what I should be looking for, if that makes sense. I’m...

    Name of a silicon

The silicon in my kitchen needs replacing. I bought some top silicon sealant a couple of years ago, but can’t remember the name and wondered if anyone else can. It was called a number; something like 574. Does this ring any bells? I thought it was good stuff, but would this be the...

    Artex

The only way I’ve found to smooth Artex is to re-plaster.

Am I destroying the insulation qualities of the roof insulat

I know someone who laid down loads of insulation and then boarded the loft. He not only reduced the effectiveness of the insulation, but it pushed down on his ceilings and made all the joints crack.

    Neglected Brushes

I look after my brushes and some I inherited from my dad. A short while ago Mrs Therms decided to paint something (goodness knows why). She left the brush lying on the top of the paint tin. When I found it I could have sharpened the end and used it as a chisel. I was furious. I tried soaking...

    Inhibitor

Blimey, that was a fast reply. I'll look online about getting some sentinel x100. Is there defenitely value in putting inhibitor into the system? How do you get it in there?

    Inhibitor

I’ve drained and re-flooded my central heating system a couple of times this year to move and change radiators. Should I add an inhibitor to the system? If so is it a DIY jobbie? I have a combie boiler and pressurised system. Thanks all

    Grouting Internal Corners & Sealing

I’ve never heard of sealant tape for a corner, but I’m not a professional. In my bathroom I grouted the internal corners then, when fully dry, ran some clear silicon up it. Is this not what’s happened at your friend’s place?

    crack in ceiling

Would there be any value in driving some drywall screws either side of the crack and into the joists before taping?

Acoustic insulation : dry sand between joists ?

I have a thought, but it’s not DIY related and probably not for this board, but here goes. If it was me I’d treat the problem at source and stop my neighbour disturbing me. There are laws to protect people like you. First thing is to save neighbourly discord and talk to him about it...

    Painting onto plaster

Paint it when it’s dry. The difficulty is in determining how long it takes to dry because that’ll depend on the size of the room, the heat in the room, the airflow through the room, the plaster thickness… When the plaster is light pink then it’s safe to call it dry. Personally I’d leave...

Kitch floor or units which comes first

The answer to this depends on whether you are my Father in Law or not. He tiles behind his kitchen cupboards and lays the flooring under them. That’s because his wife (my Mother in Law) insists on cleaning behind them and under them. None of his cupboards are fixed, so he can pull them out. He’s...

Oak flooring... again (sub floor question)

I'm still not sure why you need to skin the floor with ply Simple answer – I’m lazy and I see this as the easiest way of doing it. Actually that’s not the full story – I’m flooring the whole downstairs apart from the kitchen, which sounds grand, but I live in a small house. The house...

Oak flooring... again (sub floor question)

Very sage advice about marking the position of the pipes. I’ve done this whenever I’ve had the floor up to do plumbing and it will be the first thing I do when I lift the carpets. I’ll also transfer these marks to the top of the plywood. Incidentally, I’ll hire one of the proper nail guns to...

Oak flooring... again (sub floor question)

Would the Timbermate be instead of using a subfloor? Jeese, suddenly it’s all got complicated; Is there anything wrong with my plan ‘A’? 10mm plywood subfloor. No underlay. Nail and not glue boards.
