    Stranded Wiring Replacement?

In my property, I have noticed that whilst most of the wiring is reasonably new solid core cabling, the cable that runs from the consumer unit to the first socket in the 30A ring main is a stranded core. Does this need replacing? I am about to get my CU upgraded, so was wondering if I should...

Priming Plywood for Tiling with Masonry Paint

If I were to use the backer boards as recommended, do they have any structural strength? Being able to cut them 'like a knife through butter' suggests this is not the case. I do have to box in service pipes & a Trevi Boost shower mixer.

Priming Plywood for Tiling with Masonry Paint

I'm using ply as I have to box in service pipes. I had the sheets cut to size at the builder's merchants as we have limited work space. The boxing that I am replacing was plywood & I was merely imitating the traditional techniques. I am aware that there are many new products on the market but...

Priming Plywood for Tiling with Masonry Paint

I am rebuilding a shower/bath & the walls around the shower area are 12mm hardwood faced WBP ply. These need preparing for tiling. As the plywood is boxing in pipework & is vented at the base, does it need sealing on the back? I have a large quantity of masonry paint & wondered if it would be...

    Remove oil-painted wallpaper

I am trying to remove the wallpaper in a large room. After steaming off one layer I have discovered another of oil-painted textured wallpaper! It has taken a full week of scraping to clear one wall, with much damage to the plaster (& myself). Can anyone suggest a better method? I did try...

    Cast Iron waste pipe repair

I can see where the 'holes' are, there is a crusty red deposit at the source. The landlords were asked about replacing the stacks but opted for pressure hoseing instead. Stacks are some 70+ years old, complete with London County Council logos. I suppose solder is out. I tried Loctite Repair...

    Cast Iron waste pipe repair

I have 2 cast iron waste pipes running through my flat, one in the kitchen & one in the bathroom. Both seem to have small leaks as rusty streaks run down them. They are soon to be boxed in & tiled over. As it is unlikely the owners of the block will replace the stack, what is the best way to...

    Potterton Suprima 50 not lighting

Had a look at the gas valve terminals. 5 pins. 1 & 2 labeled V1, 4 & 5 labeled V2. 1 is neutral, 3 is earth, 5 is live & 2&4 were linked. Found no continuity in any combination.

    Potterton Suprima 50 not lighting

...& is there no likelihood of it being a simple/cheaper blockage? The part being some £125.

    Potterton Suprima 50 not lighting

No the burner doesnt light. The electrode sparks & runs through restart 3 times... By 'gas control' do you mean the PCB as well? This is relatively new.

    Potterton Suprima 50 not lighting

My Potterton Suprima 50 fails to light after the ignition process starts the fan & activates the electrode spark. I measured 250v+ DC across the gas valve which, I believe, rules out the PCB. I have been told it may be the gas valve solenoid, which would require the replacement of the...

Potterton Prima 50F Boiler won't fire up

I have a Potterton Suprima 50 that started to to do exactly the same thing last night. Haven't had any luck getting it to relight so would be interested in how you get on.

    ...another shower

Have just measured the HW rate of flow through the 15mm non-return valve as 5.2 litres/min, down from 17litres/min. Removing the valve gives 5.8 litres/min, suggesting it is the 15mm pipe restricting the flow as the bath tap is fed by a 22mm pipe. The Croydex H20 does not seem to accommodate...

    ...another shower

...thats what I meant by the HW supply tank. CW comes from the same source as the CW supply, into the storage tank above the Albion Superduty cylinder.

    ...another shower

Not quite sure what you mean. Base of HW supply tank 183cm, pipes run down to floor level (through the cylinder) then back up to shower head at 180cm. The shower head could be lowered.

    ...another shower

Thanks Chris. The Croydex H20 has a non return valve built-in which seems OK but I will check it out. The real culprit may be a second valve that is opened by cold water pressure to let the hot through. This shuts off the hot supply when the cold is turned off. Being spring operated, I...

    ...another shower

As I am not allowed access to the storage tanks in the flat block loft, I can't comment on the arrangement up there. I have been told that it is a storage tank system. Measuring pressure with a gauge at the bath tap reads 2 to 2.2 bar. Literature with both the Croydex & the Trevi Boost...
