    Bedroom ceiling fans

Hi all, With the night time temperatures we’ve been having recently I’ve decided I’d quite like a ceiling fan in 2 of my bedrooms. Anybody fitted one and have any comments to make about what to look for/avoid etc? Main things I have questions about are: Ceiling height – Like most, my bedroom...

3 wires in a dimmer switch

This image just gave me instant flashbacks to my childhood in the 80s as we had them in the house I grew up in. Haven't seen one of these dimmers in probably 35 years and forgot they existed. Thanks

damage to oak veneer - how to repair?

Hi all, I've been fitting the latches to some oak veneer doors, done a few perfectly then got a bit lazy/careless and managed to punch right through when drilling one of the lever through bolt holes. it's pushed the veneer away as you can see. Fortunately most of the damage will be hidden...

    Tree identification

They're not great photos and the fence is a bit of a mess and acts like camouflage... but the tree is definitely my side!

    Tree identification

Yes, look like that is the one! Thanks! I've lived here about 6 years and it was already very well established at that point. I think I'll have to trim it back significantly!

    Tree identification

Hi all, Can anyone identify this tree for me please? It grows quite prolifically and in the photos I have heavily pruned the bottom 5 feet or so to clear the bit of space next to the shed. As you can see, it's located about 6 feet away from the back wall of my garage - does this represent a...

Any idea what this darker coloured loft insulation is?

Haha just been doing some work in the loft of my mid 60s built house over the past week. Having pulled up the boarding I've found all of the things you've listed instead of actual insulation in many places. Additionally - folded up old curtains and hessian sacks. Never realised that proper...

Water softener efficiency (which one is cheaper to run?)

You still need to set it up to tell it how hard the incoming water is. I've spoken to a few people who have a misconception about what this actually does. The softener is a pretty simple and dumb device, it applies 'full softening power' to all the water passing through it, regardless of the...

Why range rate a modulating boiler?

The Ideal Vogue cannot be range rated.

    Grohe Rapid SL Frame -

That's an optional part - cistern freshener tab holder. You need some other bits to make the flush plate openable to use it. https://www.grohe.co.uk/en_gb/bathroom-collection/wc-grohe-fresh.html

Need help with massive error drilling hole for soil pipe

Did your frame not come with an elbow? Normally they do as they have a specific moulded shape around the socket end to locate it in the right position on the plastic clip that holds it to the frame.

    Sealant that doesn't mold

I think it's partially to do with how it's applied as well - even the best anti mould silicone will probably be overcome if you use e.g a licked finger to smooth it - bacteria etc from your saliva becomes embedded in it and away it goes. That's an extreme example but you get the idea. Just...

recessed LED strip lighting in bathroom

Hi all, Just looking at lighting for my bathroom refurb. Instead of the usual downlights, I’d like to use a recessed LED strip in the ceiling. The ceiling is already plastered and painted so I can’t use the plaster-in channel and I’d have to use recessed surface mounting channel such as this...

Tiles removing plaster / skim coat.

Yep, spare wooden slats from a venetian blind and strips cut from the unused back panel of an ikea kitchen unit have both been used here for this purpose :D As they say - if it looks stupid, but it works, then it ain't stupid.

    Death of a Workmate

These all pressed steel ones aren't the originals - they are the already cost and quality cut versions. I still have one I inherited from my grandad - cast aluminium frame components. Probably getting on for 50 years old. Nice.

Tile levelling system with wider grout lines

IME you're way better off using the levelling clips + separate spacer anyway. Buy the thinnest levellers - they break off easiest and and more reliably.

What is a wet/dry vacuum used for?

Yep me too, it's taken a beating and still going strong. Takes cheapo Einhell bags from amazon or ebay. Only slightly irritating thing with mine is that the 'wand/pole/lance' is a multi-piece plastic affair which in all honestly is a total crap and a waste of time. But I never use it anyway.

    Shower screen wallpost fitting question

Hi all, Just fitting a Kudos Inspire shower screen, although I guess this applies to any other shower screen too: The installation instructions are very clear about running your bead of silicone round the entire edge of the bath before installation. OK, fine. Then, when you install the...

Modulating Gas Boiler and Smart Thermostat

The Ideal Vogue (and probably other models) modulates and uses opentherm to communicate with their own Touch (or its successor the Halo) control. Problem is, those controls are total crap. Well the Touch is, no personal experience of the Halo but I would be surprised if it's not also crap...
