My old floorboards thickness is only 13mm!

I just found this sub-floor thickness guidance on another web site. "for joist centres up to 450mm, 18mm thick board can be used" "for joist centres of 610mm, 22mm thick board should be used"

    Plywood Beauty Contest

It's a living room. I'm going to put down a plywood floor, screwed to the joists, followed by a heavy carpet underlay, followed by a carpet. [ I am replacing old 25mm floorboards so if choose 18mm ply this will leave a gap of 7mm. I could possibly fill this with some proprietory mineral...

What's the thinnest plywood allowable for a subfloor?

I am planning on screwing 8' x 4' plywood sheets onto wooden joists to create a subfloor. What's the thinnest plywood allowable for a subfloor? How do the joist centres influence this ?

Noise from a fridge/freezer in the flat above

It may be worth checking your lease to establish who legally owns the joist area above you i.e. who owns the gap between your ceiling and their floor. Then you may be able to tackle the problem from your side, take down a part of your ceiling, install soundproofing into the joist cavity...

Fermacell flooring boards on top of WBP ply

Starting with bare joists, I want to lay down boards of 8' x 4' WBP ply. On top of this I plan to lay a floating floor of 'fermacell flooring boards'. My choice of fermacell is to achieve sound insulation from the noisy flat below. I'll probably put dense mats between the joists as well...

What's best for new flooring? Ply, MDF, Chip, Floorboards?

I am in the same situation as yourself. Although I have two large rooms to re-floor to your one. My understanding is that there are regs that require you to use at least 18mm as the thickness of the new flooring. Less than that could be unlawful. I am still deciding what material to...

    F'in builders

For government debts i.e. tax, the company debt follows the company director. The debt still exists even though the company has shut down. Not sure if this also applies to trading debts. You could try ringing the council trading standards for advice. You could also try the small claims...

4 Cables into a Junction Box

I also have a 4 wire JB under my floorboards. I have the same detective work to do. I'm hoping to find that 2 of the 4 wires are simple spurs. I only have slight diy knowledge so you should ask an electrician how best to replace a 4 wire JB. My suggestion would be one of the following...

'Get PLC' Consumer Unit and Schuba MCB's any good ?

I've inspected my consumer unit for branding. The unit itself says 'Get PLC' . The MCB's temselves have the make 'Schuba' written on them. I've never heard of these makes before. Can anyone with experience of CU's comment on this manufacturer and their products. Are they good, bad or...

Filling in a screw hole in the hall and re-drilling it

To make good, drill out the old hole with a larger drill and remove remains of old rawlplug. Then at surface level use something like this to make a larger recess where the hole used to be then fill the hole with plaster level to rest of surface, allow to dry, sand smooth and paint

Iron railings damaged / missing at street level

Front garden of terraced house has a very low brick wall, say 1 or two bricks high. Out of this wall black iron railings are erected up to waist height. The only problem is that two or three rail posts are missing through vandalism or neglect. One or two are missing completely, others...

Sum of MCB ratings > CU rating ?

Thank you gents for your guidance. Reading between the lines, that sounds like a "yes". i.e. I can safely add more MCB's to the CU taking the new sum of MCB ratings above 100 amps, *provided* I am sure the new expected max load does not exceed the supplier's fuse rating.

    Combined MCB/RCD

That's terrific thank you. I had no idea these things existed ! Judging by the photo, these RCBO things ( on your link ) look fairly generic. Can these things fit into any CU regardless of make? I can't remember the manufacturer of my CU. It's some German make beginning with 'S' .

    Combined MCB/RCD

I have no RCD's. I'm assuming my MCB's ( b rated ) are there simply to protect their circuits from excess current. Since MCB's are designed to trip in x milliseconds for y milliamps, do they give me ( as a side-effect of their primary function ) any protection against electrocution ? Why...

Sum of MCB ratings > CU rating ?

My consumer unit is rated at 100 amps. If I add up the ratings of all the fuses/MCB's installed in the consumer unit , can these exceed 100 amps ? Put another way, if I want to have an extra radial circuit with an additional MCB, is it permitted to apply 'diversity' and go over the 100 amp...

    Soundproofing semi: Opinions?

If it's the canned foam I've been using then suggest maximum caution and respect for the stuff during use. i.e. wear goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands as it is seriously nasty stuff to get on you. e.g. iF the foam goes where you don't want it to , wait for it to dry ( at least...

    Soundproofing semi: Opinions?

Instead of rockwool, you might consider using slabs of material with a higher density. If you google for "acoustic mineral wool slabs" or similar there are some vendors. Slab Sizes are typically 1200mm x 600mm. in varying thickesses e.g. 25mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm
