    Fireplace lintel?

I have been ripping various bits off my house and revealed a fireplace in a fireplace :) The more recent bricks have a metal lintel below them but the original soldier course do not seem to have anything below them, other than the new cement and bricks. I would like to take out the new bricks...

    Remove tiles laid on tiles

Brilliant, thanks for the advice. I will get a scraper and see how removing the top tiles goes. It is concrete under the original tiles so water should be fine. Thankfully the hall, which has the same tiles, has simple been carpeted over so less damage to those.

    Remove tiles laid on tiles

Hi, I have just bought a 1930s property and have discovered that new porcelain tiles in the kitchen are actually laid over old, original tiles which look really nice. Is there any way I have a chance of removing the top tiles, and the tile adhesive use to lay them, without recking the bottom...

    Rising damp...

Thanks again for the help. It is in no way a deal breaker. The whole house needs decorating anyway, and the ceilings have been over-coated with polystyrene tiles so will need taking down and re-doing, so the damp is just another item on the list. My main worry is doing something that will make...

    Rising damp...

Hi, I am looking to buy a property. It is a 1930's with a slate DPC. The survey says that the walls in the front and an internal wall in the hall are damp and I noticed that they felt damp, with the wallpaper coming off, when I viewed the property. It is an empty house. The surveyor mentioned...

Not sure of building reg's regarding fire ...

I did a loft conversion with stairs exiting into a room like above. I needed to have an automist system installed in the room to protect it long enough to use it as an exit route. However I didn't have a final exit in the room the stairs ended in, so that might go in your favour. My local...

Lining a chimney for an open fire

Hi, I live in an old house and unfortunately the lining on my chimney has gone, allowing the smoke to spill into an adjacent flue. To solve this I am looking to get the chimney lined but keep an open fire; I already have a stove in the next room along and fancied keeping the open fire. If I...

Washing machine standpipe into 40mm boss on pan connector

Hi, I have a downstairs toilet with a pan connector that has a 40mm boss connector on the top http://www.multikwik.com/product/39/130/90%EF%BF%BD-bend-incl-40mm-compresion-bos.html. The pan connector goes directly into the floor and then, I think, onto a sewage pipe. I don't believe this goes...

    Help with material

Hi, I have a small brick leant-to type structure at the back of my house that I guess was once an outside toilet and is now inside (old Victorian house). It is roofed with slate but there is no fascia at the side. Instead it appears the gap between the brick and slate has been filled with a...

    Awkward extractor fan venting

Thanks for the help. If I could fit a vent in the fascia that was not obstructed by the guttering would this be OK or would I still need to fit a soffit? Otherwise I guess the best DIY route is to attach a short run of soffit where the ducting comes out. This should not be too difficult as...

    Awkward extractor fan venting

Hi, I have an awkward extractor fan venting problem;I don't know the best way to get the ducting out the house. The extractor fan is fitted in the bathroom loft space and uses flexible ducting to extract from the bathroom. This has all fitted and wired in professionally. However, the...

Is Dulux Pure Brilliant White Matt Emulsion 7.5L vinyl based

Thanks for the advice. As I worked out that I would probably need more paint anyway I went and bought some contract Matt for the mist and undercoat and it seems to have come out ok. I was a little worried about the patchiness after the first coat of proper emulsion but the second evened...

Is Dulux Pure Brilliant White Matt Emulsion 7.5L vinyl based

I have just bought a tub of Dulux Pure Brilliant White Matt Emulsion 7.5L from B&Q. Although I can see no reference to it being vinyl based I wanted to double check as I am going to use it to mist coat and then paint newly skimmed walls and ceiling and know, thanks to this forum, that using a...

How easy to move this toilet (pic attached)

Hi, I would like to move my toilet in the downstairs cloakroom. The pan connects into a hole in the concrete floor. The current setup and required one are detailed in the following, pitiful, picture: Is there a flexible connector I could use in this situation or is there other work...
