How is my Victorian porch ceiling made?

Highly scientific method i.e. knocking on it. Doesn't feel dense like plaster and lath, feels to me like a single wooden board. Looks like it too although I expect that doesn't come across in my ropy photo... You've got me there I must admit. I guess that date would make it Edwardian, then?

How is my Victorian porch ceiling made?

Important not to over-estimate my mad DIY skillz chap :) Generally like to think I can fill any holes I make but if I knew how this lot went together I might attack with a bit more confidence... Appreciate the hints & tips as ever...

How is my Victorian porch ceiling made?

Definitely wood! Lath and plaster would be (relatively) easy as you could knock a hole in it then fiill it afterwards. Not too sure I could get a good finish by cutting a hole in the wood and trying to fill it...

How is my Victorian porch ceiling made?

Ah now there's an idea. As you can see the cable for the light simply sticks through the wood and has been secured with putty/filler. I'm installing a PIR which I think will be a bit destructive, so I wonder if it might be easier to remove the old ceiling and put up a new one. I just...

How is my Victorian porch ceiling made?

Hello everyone, I live in a Victorian terrace built in 1903. It has a standard covered porch at the front. I'm looking to install a PIR onto the porch ceiling, which only measures about 2' x 2'. Can anyone offer any insight as to how the ceiling works, for want of a better phrase? I...

Dot and dab or furring strips?

Hello everyone. I'm putting plasterboard up in my bathroom, replacing the knackered plaster that's there at the moment. The plasterboard will then be tiled. Two of the walls are stud partitions, which will be a normalish/big DIY challenge. Two of the walls are brick, with plaster...

Compression all round! This whole pipe diameter business is a complicated little monster, isn't it...

(Brand new) 35mm waste to 40mm - help!

Thanks chum, this will be the solution. Luckily the old installation has some 1 1/4 pipe that it will be able to donate, saving me a third trip to Wickes in two days... Part of the problem is trying to work in mm when plumbing would rather do inches. Good lesson. Ta :)

(Brand new) 35mm waste to 40mm - help!

Ah yes. The waste definitely fits into a 40mm compression fitting, but the S trap I've got has a captive nut at one end that's supposed (I think) to screw straight on to the waste. Does that ring any bells? --EDIT-- would a 32mm s trap with a compression fitting on one end connect to a...

(Brand new) 35mm waste to 40mm - help!

Afternoon all. I have here a brand new chrome effect waste from Wickes with a bore of 35mm. This surprises me somewhat as I would have expected to be able to easily connect a brand new waste to a 40mm soil pipe, but there we are. Is there such a thing as a reducer that will couple my...

Making a box to hide pipes

Nice one, cheers guys. Thanks for the link also. Re tile backer boards - that sounds like the ticket, especially as I'm likely to have hardiboard left over from doing the floor. Can someone suggest how you would join two pieces of hardiboard together to form a right angle, though? It looks...

Changing pipe direction 90 degrees – no room for a joint

Ah ok. In that case they might be perfect. Thanks for the tips - tons of handy stuff on YouTube, just didn't know what I was searching for until you handy chaps arrived. Cheers!

Changing pipe direction 90 degrees – no room for a joint

Ah, didn't know these existed. They look dead handy. When you heat them, though, do you need to apply heat from all angles (impossible for me due to the walls), or will applying a blowtorch from one direction get things hot enough to create a seal?

Making a box to hide pipes

Hello everyone. I live in a Victorian terrace with a very (about 6' by 6') bathroom. Making matters worse is the fact that all the pipes in there - to the basin and toilet, and from basin and toilet to outside, are inside the bathroom, i.e. no inside the internal walls. This obviously...

Changing pipe direction 90 degrees – no room for a joint

Evening all. It's new basin time here at ismellburning towers. The current basin is directly above where the pipes come into the bathroom through the floorboards. That means the pipes simply travel up vertically, and are then bent to meet the taps. What I want to do now is have those...

Attaching extractor fan to air brick

I'll attach a vent to the outside of the house to keep things clean and stop draughts coming in – was envisaging drilling out both inside and outside bricks and ducting between them. Unless you think only the inside brick needs removing, and attaching ducting to the inside of the outer...
