MCB Failure or something else ?

Interestingly it is in a building void and dust could potentially get in I think. Whether that could be the cause or not is another matter. Mechanically it feels very sound. An RCD on the other side of the circuit between it and the sockets is a very interesting (and PITA) thought. And...

MCB Failure or something else ?

No hint from the lever: it feels mechanically sound. Not 100% certain when the extension was done. but my memory is house build 1986 and the extension done a remarkably short time afterwards (like maybe 87/88). The extension is essentially a top floor extension further over the garage. I have...

MCB Failure or something else ?

    1. Yes I have a multi meter. I also have a flat head screwdriver voltage tester - which I see in the pinned posts get a bit of a panning! But is what i would typically use when changing switches/sockets etc. to do voltage checks). Quick question, and bearing in mind I haven't yet looked inside...

MCB Failure or something else ?

Hi, apologies if the answer is already elsewhere on the forum but I could not immediately find it. Main bedroom sockets is its own circuit and MCB (it was built as an extension post house build). Short story: none of the sockets are working with the MCB lever up. Longer story: I was about to...

    Advice on light switch type

Thanks for the replies. Grid Switches: that's opened up a whole new world for me. It will probably be after Xmas now when I get to take a further look at the switches themselves, but looking at websites this looks exactly like what I have. Unfortunately not available in the range / finish I had...

    Advice on light switch type

Situation: bedroom lights: Single switch, plus switches either side of the bed, anyone of which can be used to switch main lights. However the by the bed switches are a 2 gang with the second switch controlling over bed reading lights. Having taken off the face plate, they are of a type I've...

    Cutting tile in situ

In the end I went to hire shop and hired a grinder with a diamond blade in it. Worked a treat. Cost me £28 in hire fees but given I didn't have an appropriate tool in the first place it was money well spent. Thanks for your help and input (all).

    Cutting tile in situ

thanks for everyones inputs. Don't have a 180e, looks like I need to consider getting one. Small grinding bit in a drill: looks like this is thought to be somewhat more prone to disaster. I previously had a short attempt with a tile file but decided that it was probably not a starter.

    Cutting tile in situ

HI. Replacing electrical socket plates in kitchen. Problem with one of those on tiled wall. One of the tiles comes down over the back box i.e. wasn't cut to the back box hole. The existing plate is ok, but the new one won't fit in the space. The tile needs to be cut back. Ceramic tile, quite...

Correcting installation/wiring of in duct extractor

Given the way this place is wired....probably not :-) And don't even start to mention the heating system.... So: yes there is an isolator switch, in roof space. Existing feed from bathroom light switch is routed via the isolator (based on obvious test....). however, access to back of...

Correcting installation/wiring of in duct extractor

many thanks, very helpful. Fan isolator switch: good point, I need to do some tracing back (if there is then it is in the roof space, not downstairs. Point re. same lighting circuit. OK, thanks. Hadn't considered that but makes sense (move from 1 bed flat to 4 bed house = not taking into...

Correcting installation/wiring of in duct extractor

many thanks, and blimey that was a fast response. This is probably a daft question if I thought about it. Assuming I take a permanent live feed from another source/circuit connection box. Do I just connect the live up, or should I also be connecting the neutral as well (an potentially the...

Correcting installation/wiring of in duct extractor

House moved into has an Addvent AVX 100 IDT timer in duct extractor fan serving the bathroom. Fan is located in loft space. However it does not 'overrun' the timer switch; it has only been wired up to feed from light switch. I don't have a manual/wiring diagram for it and can't find one on...
