    Plastering around timber beam

I'll try to paint a better picture: The oak beam is a feature beam above a fireplace, the beam is to sit on blockwork pillars which jut into the room about 18", the blockwork above the beam completes the breasting but only upto the ceiling. Hope this makes it a bit clearer. Thanks

    Plastering around timber beam

Yes that's the idea, but not board, scratch and then skim, maybe i could use some buliding paper just at the back of the bell bead to stop it squeezing through, what do you think?

    Plastering around timber beam

I've a bit of an idea, do you think it will work? or can anybody see any major problems. There are only just over 2 courses of block to build above the beam. If I support these on strong angle iron just hovering above the beam and rebate the bottom course of blocks with disc cutter so they're...

    Plastering around timber beam

Hi, What would be the best method to plaster around and up to a large timber 'feature' beam, that is likely to shrink and move (Oak beam that is not yet fully dried). To prevent all lot of future filling and redecorating. I suspect this beam could shrink as much as 1/2" to 3/4" in width as it...

    Plastering Fibre board?

I've had a look at the fire resistant plaster on vitcas's site and they say to apply about 6mm thick directly to blockwork - but if i do this at that thickness it could get expensive! would it be feasable to apply at half the thickness onto S/C/Lime scratch coat? thanks

    Plastering Fibre board?

Where can i get heatproof plaster from? Could a good plasterer get a reasonable finish with sand, cement and lime mix and not bother with heat proof plaster and would this withstand the heat by itself, or is the heat proof plaster required to protect the backing coat. Thanks

Hi, i'm fitting an 8' x 8' oak beam above a fireplace and would like to carry on above with blocks, has anybody had any experience in building on oak, The oak beam has been outside for some time, but i suspect is not completely dry and will move, split and shrink once in position and subject to...

    Window reveals - cavity closers

Thanks for replies - if you were sticking two layers, do you stick the first layer of plasterboard, then apply the adhesive to this in dabs or with something like a tile adhesive spreader?

    Window reveals - cavity closers

What would be the standard procedure for plastering the internal window reveals (cheeks) when plastic cavity closer and polystyrene filler is present. Would it normally be boarded with plasterboard? Even if rest of room is not being dry-lined. Thanks

    gypsum hardwall

These blocks are very dry but they are concretes (oversight at start of build!) don't really mind waiting 3 weeks before painting. Is it possible to plaster hardwall onto sand and cement scratch used as a basecoat to acheive final thickness. i.e one coat of s & e and then one coat of hardwall...

    gypsum hardwall

I've got dry lining elsewhere in the house and i'm not very keen, this room is going to be a kitchen and when installing fixings for cupboards etc. I want to be able to fasten to the walls with more security than dry lining allows. Does hardwall really take that long to dry out? How long would...

    gypsum hardwall

Could anybody help please - How thick can hardwall be applied to the walls (need to use this to meet u value) and is there any problems with cracking when finished with skim if hardwall is applied to dense concrete blocks. Has anybody had bad experiences with this product?

    ceiling insulation

Nothing really odd about walking from one floor covering to another (carpet to timber to tiles all this goes on in most houses i've been in) clipping underfloor heating to timber can't replace the thermal mass of a sand and cement screed - plus the heat you put into a big lump of masonry is...
