    Exterior surface

I am in the process of laying in a new soil pipe. Before I started digging the area adjacent to the exterior wall (where I will lay the new pipe) was covered in a concrete apron (about 4" thick) that extended about 18" up the wall. this has all cracked and is above the dpc so has bridged it and...

    Cracked Soil Pipe Repair

Dug up around the soil stack at the weekend to try and locate the sewer line so that I can put a new soil line into it. When I uncovered the base of the soil stack I found a crack in the ceramic piping. Its old and oozes water whenever the toilet is flushed. Is there a way of reparing this...

    Do my joists need strengthening??

You should consult a structural engineer. Sytrengthening the joists is not difficult. Get 2 lengths of 7X2 and attach either side of the current joist using bolts through the existing joist.

    Cracks in concrete

Been rendering my bathroom for the last few weeks. Did a large thick section last weekend and as its dried its developed deep cracks. Is this a sign of the wrong cement/sand mix? Too much/little water? Or have i laid it on too thick (3/4 of an inch in places)? Thanks for any advice.

    Bathroom Door

Is there any reason why a bathroom door should be narrower than the other doors in my flat? The other doors are around the standard 76cm wide whilst the bathroom is around 70cm wide. Is there a reason for this as I am moving the door anyway and am planning to put a new 76cm door back...

    Water Main

Some further questions for you: 1. how deep should the new main be laid in the garden leading into the house? 2. If it ok just to dig the rench and then refill it with the earth taken out or do I need to bed it in anything specific? Once again, cheers for any advice.

    Water Main

In am contemplating laying a new water main, for 2 main reasons: 1. The current set up has a lead (see reason 2) pipe coming into the flat and my feed splitting off with a 15mm copper pipe & stopcock under the stairs. I've been told this is a factor in the low pressure I'm getting. 2. Dont...

    Woodworm

Like I said - woodworm is very rare in this day and age. Any house with half decent central heating is extremely unlikely to have any sort of infestation. Thats not to say that wood may have been wekened by extensive boring in the past - which is why i would recommend getting a good carpenter...

    Woodworm

I have been reliably informed that woodworm is almost non existent in dry homes with central heating. The larvae require cool damp environments. You may have holes in the woodwork but if yours is an older property these are likely to be old woodworm holes and the woodworm are no longer...

    Lumpy cement

The last couple of times I have knocked up some cement its finshed with small hard pea sized lumps - this is a nightmare when trying to render. Anyone got a clue as to whats causing it? I have knocked up plenty of cement over the last few months so there's nothing wrong with my mixing!

    Best Heating set up

for a 2 bed flat with a shower with a large head (8" diameter). I need high volume of hot & cold water at a good pressure. I'm thinking of a 150 litre HW cylinder, potterton boiler and installing a new 22mm water main from the valve in the front garden. Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Locating Sewer Pipe

The other thing is that the existing soil stack is cast iron and very old, God knows how difficult it would be to cut into it to join the new pipe. What sort of fall do I need by the way?

    Lead pipe replacement

I've only been in the property 4 months. I plan to lay a new 22MM water main to the bathroom to give me maximum pressure for my shower (8" rose).

    Locating Sewer Pipe

The site for the new WC is 2 rooms away. It would mean about 10 metres of pipe around the outside of the building.

    Locating Sewer Pipe

I want to move my WC. This obviously means I have to lay a connection from the new WC site to the sewer line - but how can I find out where it is? I have rung the council planning dept - they dont know. I have rung both water authorities that deal with my flat - they dont know anything apart...

    Lead pipe replacement

Once again cheers masona. Would the fact that my water is supplied from a 15mm split off of the lead main that carries on upstairs explain my low water pressure? If I lay in a new 22mm main from the water company's valve in the garden (so it has two pipes leaving it rather than 1) increase my...

    Lead pipe replacement

I want to replace my water main which is currently spilt off a lead pipe with my stopcock just after the split. I've got poor water pressure because of it. Are you sure that the water company is responsible for the main from the exterior water point (located in my front garden) to my...
