Newly Half-tiled bathroom, upper plastering showing large damp areas.

That's interesting, Mr Chibs. I can see how polythene sheeting twixt wall and plasterboard would block water coming through (from outside), not sure if it would have any effect on internally generated water i.e. condensation 'being absorbed'. However, I'm coming 'round to the idea of this over...

Newly Half-tiled bathroom, upper plastering showing large damp areas.

Steve, I have emptied the vent hole to reveal an 8” deep wall to exit tile, knocked through what looks like solid breezeblock leaving an 8” x 5” hole in the wall. I had hoped it might be cavity breezeblock, but no such luck. I will have an extractor fan wired in to this position. As for paint...

Newly Half-tiled bathroom, upper plastering showing large damp areas.

Thanks Steve, the original 1970s wall covering was 10mm concrete over breezeblock with a plaster finish. The renovation plasterer skimmed another smooth layer of plaster over the existing after making good, giving three layers in all. The extractor fan was not installed owing to the bathroom...

Newly Half-tiled bathroom, upper plastering showing large damp areas.

I was advised to have only the lower half of a completely renovated ground floor bathroom tiled, as there would be "a condensation problem when showering or bathing" if wholly tiled, floor-to-ceiling. Apparently the plastered upper area would be better at absorbing excess moisture whereas it...

Hotpoint WD420 - replaced dead heater, now error F7 shows, flashing 2,3,4

Ah, the pressure switch - that round thing in top of machine with a pipe going in to it? Someone else suggested blowing through it. I'll have a look tomorrow. As for wiring connections - they're all good, I checked them myself when installing new heater assembly

Hotpoint WD420 - replaced dead heater, now error F7 shows, flashing 2,3,4

Washer/Dryer HP WD420 water would not heat up, so pulled heater and thermistor out - both dead :( Bought genuine HP replacements and installed them today. Now machine does not fill or go on to wash - just displays rapid on/off led flashing, together with flashing leds (from the top down) 2, 3...

VicPlum Toilet Pan needs re-positioning - how to secure to floor after move

You are so right Elkato. Moving the pan around a bit, the whole silicone joint came adrift. I got the local professional in, who confirmed it as a monster bodge-up. Replacing the rubbish concertina with a solid 90 degrees cut-to-size solid jobby, which slotted into the vertical soil pipe exit...

VicPlum Toilet Pan needs re-positioning - how to secure to floor after move

Doggit - that's a super tip. I was wondering how to accurately align the replacement out-of-sight brackets, let alone screw them down in an impossible tight access gap. Blu-Tac to the rescue! Who knew?

VicPlum Toilet Pan needs re-positioning - how to secure to floor after move

Thanks for that. It got me thinking. I could angle-grind off the two bolts on the plastic supports. And throw them away. Then at the wall end, drill and bolt down two 2x4 timber 15" long pieces going length-wise. With no plastic or bolts in the way, slide back the pan to my best postion. Big...

VicPlum Toilet Pan needs re-positioning - how to secure to floor after move

New toilet pan with a cistern-concealing 'cupboard' recently installed. Due to my careless mistake the 'cupboard' when it arrived was over a foot deep and in the restricted space available this only left a few inches between the front end of the seat and the wall. My bad. I put up with the...

Re-positioning Gas cooker on opposite kitchen wall - design problems

Harsh...but your point is well made - and taken. So, what do you think I should earmark for this professional work, before I start selecting kitchen units etc. from what is left of my budget? In round numbers, ball park figures. Just so I don't think I'm being ripped off. Hundreds? 1k? 2k? What?

Re-positioning Gas cooker on opposite kitchen wall - design problems

100 year old terraced house has kitchen gas supply in far corner and BG boiler is situated there. Previous owner had a free standing old-type gas cooker in the same corner due to proximity to gas tap connector which emerges from the concrete floor. This is clearly no use for a modern cooking...

Lawn Mower motor component - what is it? (photo)

I guess you get what you pay for...the first one conked out completely within a month. wickes replaced it with this iffy-copter! I guess I'm stuck with it :-(

Lawn Mower motor component - what is it? (photo)

Well, its a Wickes supplied LandxCape 1000W 32cm jobby. Cost £39.99! After it cuts out, you just have to do the 'press button and close lever' procedure, and it restarts immediately. It's set on the highest cut setting - 55mm. There's no moss on the lawn, just scrappy grass. It is a 'brush' type...

Lawn Mower motor component - what is it? (photo)

My small new rotary electric mower keeps cutting out at the slightest tufty bit of short grass, or even a lump in the lawn surface. It seems to be way too sensitive. When there is a small drop in motor speed - NOT labouring, just a slight 'working a bit harder' lowered motor note that you get...

Epoxy Estimator - how far will the JB WELD 2oz tubes go?

Thanks to you all for suggestions for alternatives to epoxy 2-pacs. What with weight of the headboard timber plus the the weight of the blind and batten - <9.5Kg, chris-o's suggestion of C-Tec Power Grab n Bond Construction Vertical Bonding Industrial Adhesive looks like the business. I'm...

Epoxy Estimator - how far will the JB WELD 2oz tubes go?

Thanks Frank. I share your doubts about the advisability of testing the epoxy sticking power vs the co-efficient of expansion of upvc, but faced with no adjacent wall or roof supports, I have nothing to screw my headboard (square timber 2M by 3.5 x 4.5mm) and brackets into. Apart from hollow...
