When laying on top of existing concrete the important thing is ensuring that your new slabs do not raise the patio level closer that 150mm to the damp proof course of the house. That was my problem as the existing patio level was at 150mm. I got around it by leaving a gap of 6 inches from the...

CCTV viewable via 3G on iphone

A friend of mine is looking for an inexpensive CCTV camera so that can he can monitor (with video image) on an iPhone. Although monitoring a drive leading up to an agricultural building, it can be an internal camera as it will be mounted in a covered area. I have done a lot of searching but...

Membrane is flaking away - what are my options?

It is felt like. Although when bits break off it look like it is a very thin material like a bandage, that has been sandwiched between a papery substance. Before it broke up I thought it might have been something you could buy in the 60's call pitch paper for wallpapering over damp patches. But...

Membrane is flaking away - what are my options?

AFter a recent visit to my loft I discovered that much of the membrane between the batons and rafters Has flaked away or in a state where is flakes away at the touch. I wonder what my options are? I really do not want (can't afford) to,have the tiles ripped off and the membrane re-laid and...

    Conservatory Roof Joist Spacing

I'd reconsider 25mm polycarbonate sheets and go for 35 or glass, we have 35mm and lose a lot of heat thru the roofing

    Roof insulation costs

For a while now I've been looking at these ads in the National Press from companies who spray foam on the underside of your roof tiles to insulate your loft, adhere the tiles to the roof and -no doubt- empty your bank account! Does anyone have any idea what these companies charge, roughly...

calculating water capacity of heating system

Are they easy to fit? Does it replace your existing room stat or is it/can it be additional to the room stat?

calculating water capacity of heating system

We had this added because we use the porch to hang coats and kick off muddy boots etc (farm workers in the family!) so it a good place for them to dry and keep dirt out of the main living area as our hall is small. I am told that you can buy something that will automatically switch your...

calculating water capacity of heating system

We have a porch that has a small rad in it, I noticed last night with the heating off the temperature got to just 1 degree C, so thinking about adding antifreeze. Looks like a very expensive exercise as if my system is around 100ltrs I need 20-25 litres of antifreeze at around £30 per 5litr! -...

calculating water capacity of heating system

How do you calculate the exactly how much water is in your heating system? I have a conventional boiler with an open vent header tank in the loft, I have 3 (old) Stelrad, double radiators 1600x600 and 2 at 1000x600. I have three single radiators 1400x600 + whatever the hot water coil holds...

    Air in CH system options

So if it's a blocked cold feed, how would I check this? I assume you are referring to the pipe leading out from the bottom of the header tank. When I cleaned the system out with Fernox F3 earlier in the year water flowed through that outlet quite freely on refilling the system

    Air in CH system options

The 22mm vent pipe is about 18" above the header tank then turns downwards with the end about 6" above the water level in the tank. If important, the pump is under the bathroom floor directly below but to one side of the tank, so 9'6" to 10" above the pump.

    Air in CH system options

OK so for a while now I've had one upstairs radiator that seems to always need bleeding, it's gone from once or twice a month to once or twice a week so far this season. It is an old single rad and I am pretty sure corrosion is a major problem as there is now a very distinct smell when the air...

    Monoblock tap question

I thought this might be the situation. I did ensure the tap I purchased is for a low pressure system, and (just to be certain it wasn't the tap) I swapped the pipe connections around - I remember buying a tap once which had swarf of some kind lodged inside it restricting the flow!

    Monoblock tap question

Our kitchen sink has just one hole for a monoblock tap. The problem we have is that these taps come with a section of pipe that reduces from 15mm to about 8-10mm and that appears to affect the flow on our gravity-fed (from cylinder) hot water. The consequences being it takes a life time to fill...

    Rawbolt problem

Ok guys thanks all for your help. I've sorted it.... Just in case anyone else has this problem in the future..... it was simply the case that I hadn't pushed the bolt in far enough, and kept pressure on the bolt while screwing it up. It seems it doesn't like the idea of grabbing the thread...

    Rawbolt problem

Maybe I wasn't clear. I am trying to do them up having already once undone them. The problem seems to be that they seem to catch the thread (in so far as I turn he bolt a few times, give it a tug and find it is being held) but it doesn't tighten beyond that which seems odd.
