Complete amateur: making smallish wooden box for outdoor use

I suspect you're right gents... it's just that the placcy ones don't look quite as nice sat outside the front of my house! I'll get one of those for now then maybe have a muck about with some pallet wood as foxhole suggests, and try not to cut my hand off. Cheers all Matt *edit* I can't see...

Complete amateur: making smallish wooden box for outdoor use

Hi all I'm wanting to have a smallish storage box outside my house to keep towels/winter bits in. We're getting into the time of year now where the dog comes home soaked and soaks the walls in muddy water in the entry hall while I dry him. Figured it'd be good to have towels etc outside...

    Relocating thermostat

Good question Terry! It's on the wall in the hallway by the front door. We've bought a fairly long mirror to be fitted landscape to that wall, and the therm is in the way. It just needs to drop 6 inches or so and it'll be perfect! @ericmark taken on board thank you! I'll go with just dropping...

    Relocating thermostat

Nope! Attached tho I could drop it a few inches and achieve what I need to anyway - would I just use connecting blocks and extend the wiring? Ta Matt

    Relocating thermostat

Thanks buddy - good point on the mains. So surely I can just remove the therm, blank off the mains wiring behind it and cover the hole, then screw the therm to the wall where i do want it...? Ta Matt

    Relocating thermostat

Hi all I'm wanting to move my thermostat. Took the cover off and I see it's just a normal wiring setup (pic attached), so presumably doesn't need anything particularly complex? As a side question, the unit itself seems to have batteries in it too - is this just a backup in case the leccy is...

Repainting decking - old stuff not fully stripped

Hi all Rookie here. Just moved house, last people didn't look after the decking. Lots of footfall and weather wear, tons of rolled up peeled paint in all the grooves, some bits rotting etc. Can't afford to replace it all yet, and think it'll do for a couple more years. I spent a few hours...

Getting better locks on my front door

Well, every day's a school day! Turns out it is a deadlock one  - good job you chimed in before I bought a new one and chucked a perfectly good one away. Thanks for that mate, much appreciated. The door looks to be just wood to me, no idea what type - this ain't really my area. But my...

Getting better locks on my front door

Thanks buddy - didn't even know you could get a deadlocking Yale! only ever had chubbs. I need to find out if this front door is reinforced or not too, as it's got big glass panes in it for the top half which you could easily smash through to unlock the yale. I'll pick one up this weekend...

Getting better locks on my front door

Hi all Just moved house - front door has a "chubb lock" at waist height (looks like a five-lever deadlock style, how can I confirm?) and a yale-lock at shoulder height (which as we know, can be opened with a coke bottle). I don't feel this is enough. What would you suggest? Remove the Yale...

[Newbie] Pitched garage roof looks a bit dodgy

ha! Cheers buddy! It's mainly things like arse-wipes, kitchen roll, cat litter etc which I never realise has run out until it runs out. I won't overdo it though ;)

Tv bracket into concrete blocks... can't get screws all the way in!

Thanks again John. Is it frowned upon here to still snigger at flange? The supplied ones are pretty decent looking to be honest - not your usual argos stuff (though this was from Amazon). Good and solid, they have a small flange and also the splines so that's nice. I'm thinking it's likely the...

Tv bracket into concrete blocks... can't get screws all the way in!

Thanks John. On reflection, this was a bit of a stupid question. Might need to use some brute force with my good grips to finish the job as they aint moving. The tv weighs sod all also, so it's not like it's going to tear itself from the wall. Thamks again Matt

Tv bracket into concrete blocks... can't get screws all the way in!

Hi all Fitting a tv bracket in the garage. Drilled 50mm deep as instructed with 8mm masonry bit using a hammer drill. Popped the 40mm plugs in, tapped lightly into place with a hammer. Got 50mm bolts/screws with deep Philips heads on them. Only problem is the drill walked slightly during...

[Newbie] Pitched garage roof looks a bit dodgy

Thanks all - Costco here I come! Still think it's weird having a scaffolding type beam diagonally down one side raised up on a block of wood... doesn't seem very professional to me, but then what do I know! Cheers gents Matt

[Newbie] Pitched garage roof looks a bit dodgy

Oh ok cheers mate, it looked a bit random and unplanned to me! Thought it would be a bit more uniform than that! Much appreciated Matt

[Newbie] Pitched garage roof looks a bit dodgy

Oh sorry just to clarify, they've just lay some mdf over the joists to work like basic shelving. That was my plan tbh - to store stuff from the costco run etc. But I have no idea how much weight that kind of structure can take!

[Newbie] Pitched garage roof looks a bit dodgy

Hi all Caveat: I know zero about this stuff so please feel free to explain like I'm 5. Just moved house, finally got a garage, was planning on using the pitched roof as storage. They've put a few bits of mdf over the joists, but I'm concerned that it all looks a bit weak to be taking any...

    Making a 4 bed into a 3 - bad idea?

Hi all I have zero knowledge of this stuff so excuse me if it's a stupid question. We're looking at buying a house, but it's a 4 bed and we only need 3. 2 of them are box rooms separated by a wall which doesn't appear to be brick (plasterboard?) I assume knocking the wall through to make them...
