    Room for patio awning?

I'd like to put up a patio awning. I want to mount it over patio windows but only have 30 cms (inc a steel lintel). Is this sufficient? I don't want to buy one & find it won't fit.

Red led staying lit on hd

I was going to uninstall NIS but noticed that red led came on immediately & stayed on during bootup, even after I excluded all basic programs from starting using MSCONFIG menu (inc Norton) and did not blink once. Do you think that it's still worthwhile uninstalling NIS?

Red led staying lit on hd

The red led is staying on all the time on my hd. The pc seemed to work ok and the cpu usage is normal (low). This seems to coincide with recent installation of Norton Internet Security package? Is it a coincidence? :? I've also noticed that occasionally the cpu use jumps to 100% and task...

    Underfloor heating & bitumen residue

I assume from the absence of comments that what I plan to do is ok? I have removed the tiles and the black adhesive (?bitumen?) is approx 0mm to 2mm thick and laid on self-leveller. With much effort, I can scrape down to about 1/2 mm so can I wipe this with some kind of chemical to get rid of...

    Underfloor heating & bitumen residue

There is no mention about dfferent types of substrate. The details below are taken from the advert: "Kit comprises 150m twin wire earth screened heating cable mounted on robust drum, fully programmable AUBE 132-F thermostat with floor probe and conduit housing, adhesive tapes, floor priming...

    Underfloor heating & bitumen residue

I want to lay electric underfloor heating in my kitchen on a concrete floor. At the moment there are thermoplastic tiles stuck to the floor with a thin layer of bitumen. I will remove the tiles ready to lay limestone tiles. Is it safe to lay the wire on this thin layer of bitumen? I'm not...

Small gaps in oak floating floor

I've just laid an oak floating floor and it does look good. However, it's spoiled slightly by a gap of about 1 - 2mm between the odd plank over part of the length.. The tongue has been driven home & glued but there seems to be a larger machining tolerance than I would have liked or the boards...

Do I really need PVAc adhesive for floor?

Have been advised to use PVAc glue for the t&g for a floating oak floor. Have rang lots of flooring companies locally but no-one's heard of it ...let alone stock it. Can't find any anywhere. Will ordinary PVA do the job? I need to start the job in 4 days time....any ideas?? :?

That old chestnut - laying oak boards...float or glue?

Thanks WYL - it seems the concensus is for a floating floor then. Will this underlayment dampen the 'hollow' sound enough?

That old chestnut - laying oak boards...float or glue?

I really do need advice here. I plan to lay oak boards on a sand/cement screed which was laid in the spring. The boards are 18mm thick and different lengths and the room is just less than 4m x 4m. I'm unsure if the floor has a dpm but we don't suffer any damp that I'm aware of. I've read...

Fitting a pre-owned wood block floor

I've obtained a used woodblock floor which I'd like to lay in my screeded hall floor. The blocks are t&g and I still have to scrape the old adhesive off (not bitumen). As the original block floor had been sanded (poss several times), the blocks are different thicknesses above the tongue and I'm...

Can a std external h/drive be used with a laptop?

My son starts at Uni in a couple of weeks. He has an 8 month old Acer laptop with a 40gb hd. Needless to say, it is fairly full with non-academic items. Can I use an external hd thro' a USB2 port to extend what he has? Is it an easy job replacing the existing hd with a larger (capacity) one?

    Levelling a new toilet bowl

Bit of a false alarm here...when I coupled up the cistern in a dry run, I didn't fully tighten the screws. When I tried it again...properly...the screws pulled the cistern square so hardly any gap. The bowl still rocks slightly so I think I'll just put in a 1 or 2mm packer at the back and let...
