Dent in my new acrylic bath!

Hi all, while I was tiling, I dropped a tile into my nice new white acrylic bath. I had filled it with water to minimise any damage something like that would cause, but it still left a small red dent in the bottom of the bath. The red is from the colour of the ceramic (not the colour of the tile...

    hiding my dodgy work

Hi all, I have installed a "behind the wall" shower valve in my bathroom and made the stupid mistake of not leaving enough space for the valve to stick out with the adhesive, tile and face plate taken into account. Now it's far too much work to take it all apart, what I have done is cut a much...

    Shower pump not working properly

Well, I found the cause for this by just checking everything over again. After disconnecting and testing it, the hot water inlet pipe was spluttering. I had obviously not given it a good run through before connecting. I did so before reconnecting everything (running water in - and out through -...

HOT WATER GOING INTO COLD TANK

Just to follow this up, I believe it is because convection currents occur at a certain diameter. So it won't happen in a 22mm pipe, but could happen in a 1 inch or 28mm pipe. Tightening the tap restricts the diameter and stops it happening. BTW this was the cause for me, it might be completely...

HOT WATER GOING INTO COLD TANK

I'm no expert, but on my old system this happened too. It turns out the cold water pipe allowed hot water to travel back up to the CW tank as the pipe was an old imperial size which for some reason allowed this. Strangely it never happened on metric pipes. My father in law (who told me about...

    Shower pump not working properly

Hi all, I’ve just installed a Salamander ESP 50 CPV twin pump to go to a new shower (and nothing else). The pump is configured as negative head and is fed from the cold water tank and hot water cylinder respectively. I’ve fitted an auxiliary CW tank to make sure I have enough hot and cold...

    Bathroom re-fit

Hi all, I'm in the middle of re-doing my bathroom. Amongst other things I am fitting a shower bath. Now my brief (from the other half) says the wall should be tiled with the shower valve and head protruding from the wall. It's a fake wall and removal of old tiles suggests that it need...

    Recently skimmed bathroom

So what if you were to use PVA mix on a bathroom wall (brick or whatever) and then use a bonding plaster, then a finishing plaster. Would that still cause problems? I'd have thought not, but if moisture does pass through the plaster and the PVA loosens, would the entire plaster coat fall off...

Removing Artex - Job I can DIY or one for the Pros?

If you think it contains asbestos don't try to remove it yourself at all. Easier to plaster over it.

How do I splice an alarm into mains power supply?

If your experience is limited, I would say get a wireless alarm. Yes, the motion and door sensors will need to have their batteries replaced from time to time, but installing a system to the mains will invariably involve some level of redecorating afterwards. Also, it will still work even if all...

    Hi jacked / split post

BTW that question to everyone. I've also heard that you can use an epoxy to attach the tiles to the plaster. This strikes me as a bit OTT, but if it works... All comments appreciated.

    Hi jacked / split post

Hi gcol. What treatment if any would you recommend instead of using PVA? Obviously the finishing plaster has to be dry, but would you then treat it with something else or just tile straight on top of it with cement mortar? Thanks...

What to do with old hot water cylinder system? Shower?

Or you could just install a pump to improve the pressure on your shower?

    Parts for a shower

Good stuff, thanks. Presumably a hose/pipe from valve to shoer head is needed (concealed)? What diameter would it need to be?

    Parts for a shower

Hi all, really basic question. I'm about to order a shower valve and shower head. I've already got a supply to fit to the valve. Does anyone know what other pipes, fixings etc. I need to order? Not sure what fixings typically come with these. If it's any help i'm ordering these...

I'm not, but I'll use it anyway! Thanks. Been reading up on BTUs and KWhs etc. but there are too many factors to consider!

    Storage heater KW

Hi all. Can anyone tell me roughly how large (in KW) a storage heater is needed per square meter of floor space? Also do you have any recommended brands or brands to avoid? I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum, the others didn't look quite right either!
