    Tattoos

Yeah, speling isnt my strong point! I didnt have any interest in school or traditional learning. I am not a very academic person. My sister is, she works in genetics but has absolutely no common sense whatsoever! Im more of a hands on kind of person. Im better at problem solving...

    Tattoos

I cant understand why some of you have such strongly held opinions on this! Some people like tatoo's, some dont. Whats the big deal? I have quite a few. I spent £2500 on just my right arm. My wife has lots too, i find women with tatoo's sexy. My wife also happens to be a...

    Tiling on existing tiles issue

It does sound like trapped damp. Have you grouted yet? If not, dont utill the staining goes away. If you used a dark adhesive (grey) and the tiles are white, the staining may be permenant, but my guess is it will dry out.

    tiling over existing ceramic tiles

When tiling over tiles it can help to coat the exitsting tiles in adhesive first. Using the smooth, no notch, edge of your trowel spread adhesive over the tiles. Not alot. Keep the trowel as tight to the tiles as possible. This will leave very little adhesive on the tiles but will bring...

Freight Container as Temporary Garage (?)

I had the same idea for my motorbikes untill i remembered i dont have enough rear access and it would have to be craned over the house!

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

Yes, i agree. Garage is for motorbikes, not enough side access for a car unfortunately, so even if they refuse the drop kurb (doubtfull as quiet side road and all neighbours have done it) ill still be building the garage/worshop. There may be an issue though, the frontage of the house isnt...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

I'd just been searching and came up with the same info you just gave me. Ill phone some local friends and see if i can find a recomendation for an electrician. We have no morgage. She's already dropped the price, by more than she ever intended, due to the work it needs. Even if the...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

May be a good idea. Still waiting for our survey results too, but that wont go inot any electrical details. Not sure if there would be much more room for manouver either. We already knocked £11k of the £90k asking price. All new to me this, the PIR, how much would this cost us and who...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

Very much so. Im in a different trade, but am still in the building world as it were and hate substandard work. As i say, this is our first house, we plan on staying there a long time and am looking forward to its renovation. I love a project, although my projects are usualy hifi...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

I wish i could do things in that order. Unfortunately we have agree'd a price and have a set amount left (9k). I need to build a 30m garage, build a kitchen, complete bathroom, complete re-decorate, maybe complete re-plaster, re-wire, investigate heating (new gas CH with old imersion...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

I dont know the exact age of the house yet, but its late 50's at the earliest, mid 60's by the latest. Can you explain your last comment please? 'If you are rewiring get a pro to do it - unless it's a decent professional job it's a waste of time doing it.' I would abviously be getting a...

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

Thanks. Hopefully ill be able to do enough of the prep myself to make a simple re-wire affordable straight away. Not bothered about anything fancy, just bare bones sockets and lights will do for now.

    Is old wiring always unsafe?

Were in the process of buying our first house. It needs alot of work, but i can handle most of it, apart from the electrics and the gas. House is 60's build and hasnt been touched. One owner from new, doesnt even look like any socket faces have ever been removed. Stupidly i didnt look at...

Worse conditions you have worked in!

It payed ok i guess, wasnt my contract. I was working on a self employed basis for a friend who had the contract. Unfortunately the developers went under and the site ended up in the hands of the bank and he struggled to get paid. I think he ended up with 70p of every £1 :( He paid me £120...

    Becoming a full time tiler

I was a self employed tiler for 10 years, i quit about 2 years ago but not due to lack of work. Relocating due to family issues ment it was better for me to take temporary full time employment. Ill be going back to being self employed early next year by the looks of it. Alot of tradesmen...

Worse conditions you have worked in!

Not weather conditions, but i insulated a load of balconies a few years back, Marmox board laid on cement adhesive base. There were 8 flats per floor, 21 floors. Lifts didnt work, one set of stairs, no lifts. Electrics on every other floor (if you were lucky) water on ground floor and...

I NEED to build a garage!

Been looking at slab insulation and damp proof membrane. Seems ok. Im a little confused about levels though. How high above ground should the damp proof course in the wall be? The under floor membrane needs to tie into this right? However, i dont want too big a step onto the garage...

I NEED to build a garage!

It will be insulated, it will probably also get a wood burner (a good friend is a qualified fitter). I havent looked into insulating the slab, but i will. Im sure there are already many threads on this subject, ill search for some. Wall and roof insulation for sure! Ill price up the...

I NEED to build a garage!

Materials will no doubt have to be hand moved. A pain, but i can rope in a fair few friends and re-pay them with tiling work later on. I'd love to put a car in it, but there isnt much side access. So, strip foundation it is then, with re-bar i assume (can probably scavenge that for free)...

I NEED to build a garage!

Forgot to add, it will have light, and power. It will be somewhere between 20 to 80 foot from the house. Dimensions are very vauge at the moment as we dont live there yet, not completed on the purchase yet. But i spend my time at night lying in bed thinking about how im going to build this...
